other altanator kit
does any body know whear i can find a kit to put a regular alternator on my 69 bug than you would put a eletric fan in the hole i dont like the bug alternators 55amp thay suck and the vw bug shop sed that the 75 amp alt sucks too so. If i put that kit on it the alternators are less money and more amps for it and it would make it easer to work on. thanks chad

Are you getting to little power from the 55amp? There's suppost to be 90-95amp kits out there now. As far as using an electric fan in the shroud, seems like it would just drain more electrical power, as well would think you would have to redesign the shroud to get correct air flow. So, even if you get away saving money using a cheap alternator, the savings would just be lost on getting a new shroud and fan. Anyways just my two cents maybe you can run electric fans in the shroud and have good results, just doesn't seem like it would work very well.

The stock fan requires a LOT of horsepower to spin it
at high revs. You will NOT get an electric fan to produce
the kind of coo.ling needed by the engine.

Nitros,
after reading thru a few of your "vw alternators suck" posts, I can't help but come to the conclusion that you have a problem other than the alternators that are causing them to fail. If you were to give all the info about the failing alternators, wiring, fan belt adjustments, electrical demands ...... and whatever else you can think of, you could actually get to the root of the problem. It can in no way just be your luck to get all the bad alternators in your city.
My first thought would be fan belt adjustment. Are you adjusting the belt to specs? If you don't you are just creating a lot of tension and leverage on the alternator spindle, that could cause premature failure....... Or any number of other problems.

Alternator kits
My 72 bus is equiped with a 79 bug alternator.Just after my wife bought it the fan broke loose and destroyed the shroud.I replaced the fan, shroud, and the tins. All works fine.I've heard of the electric fan setup but have never seen one in use.I live in the desert and attend a lot of meets.Trust me, if there was a viable replacement to the original configuration,I'd have seen it!
