Hopefully this helps someone at some point in the future.
I have spent the last four weeks trying to rebuild my 1302 steering box without success due to the lack of replacement bearings.
Trust me, I went to every bearing supplier I could find.
As I have a RHD car, I dont have the luxury of buying a new box for $500.
Today I found someone who opened up an old steering box from a 1969 Ford Mustang to check the bearings and amazingly they are a direct replacement.
I now have bearings which I can use.
Refresh: 1969 Ford Mustang steering box input shaft bearings fit the 1302 steering box input shaft.

Re: 1302 steering box bearings
Thank you for the tip.
I cleaned up and reassembled my 1302 box. Nothing "looked" that worn, but it's not on the car or adjusted yet. If I have to tear into it again, this is good to know.

Incredibly good to know. Can anyone confirm vw used the same steering box for all supers prior to R&P steering?

I believe so. I have a 1972 1302 (Australian R/H drive) and have recently replaced the steering box with one from a 1973 1303 and the two boxes looked identical.
