VW dealers used to have a nifty fixture that allowed checking control arms for straightness, but I imagine those have all been auctioned off by now. In my experience if one's tweaked enough to cause an issue it'll show up quite soon as uneven shininess where it rides against the bushings (or brinelling from needle bearing contact).
The later arms (the ones with notches for dust shields on the link pins) are slightly larger in diameter and require even more reaming than the early ones...I remember when we put new stock bushings in the beam of the boss's offroader, it took hours to get them opened up for a good fit. We used a 3-stone small bore hone for the finish work.
If the link pins are too tight they can bind too, you may want to loosen the adjustments and ensure that they're well-lubed to rule them out.
