Rear Type 3 Brakes on a Ghia- Question

Post by 1971GhiaCoupe »

Okay, I've got T3 drums and backing lates on the rear of my 71 Ghia.

In anticipation of this mod, I expected (after reading here and other places) to need to machine the rear drum snouts a bit so the cotter would work with the castle nut.

I've test fitted everything assembled and it looks like the I won't need to machine anything...and I'm worried.

Did I not assemble it right?

Here's what I've done in order of inside out.

1) Inner grease seal w/ spacer inside
2) Circlip
3) Wheel bearing
4) Big spacer
5) Wheel Bearing
6) Backing plate
7) Wheel bearing retainer (cover) w/ big o-ring, seal and inner spacer
8) Drum
9) Nut

I might have got those mixed up a bit but I'm confident I got that part together right.

Here's my dilema...when I got the new seal/ bearing kit, it came w/ a smaller o-ring and also a washer. The washer fits around the spline of the axle just right. Is that needed on a 71 IRS? Is it a washer for the castle nut outside of the drum? Is that smaller o-ring even needed on an IRS?

I'm worried because the setup doesnt't appear to need any machining with the smaller o-ring and washer removed.

Any thought are appreciated!!

The snout needs to be machined down when installing on a short axle car or 67 w/ stock axles.Bolt right on to your 71.

That copper colored washer, do I need it on an IRS?

It fits nicely over the splines but not outside the drum.

Seems that bit may effect the cotter pin fitting or not.
