what is the best method for cutting the groove on the standard bearings to allow installation in the splitcase transmissions?

I do mine on the lathe with carbide tooling,
but heard a story of a guy doing it, still in a lathe,
but used a cut-off wheel to get the result he was happy with :?

The outer race is very hard, so I use a very slow rpm and plunge in with a parting tool,
and then widen the groove as required with a left, and then right-had tool.

I know a guy that mounts his cut off tool to the tool post, kind of the poor man's tool post grinder.
