Late ring and pinion, where is deviation written

Hello everyone,

I opened a european AM SSC transaxle to get parts for my broken swingaxle.
The ring and pinion is a 8 bolts 8:35 unit but I cannot find the deviation to set it up in my swingaxle. It isn't etched on the side of the ring as in earlier models. I also couldn't find the pairing number.
Can you tell me where I should look?

And how strong is this ring and pinion? The gearbox had the stronger 10 /15 teeth diff.

Thank you

My world history is not that great with transaxles, but they must have gone with dropping the marking globally at some point in time. Hopefully you kept notes of the pinion shim thickness as most of it comes from the ring and pinion.

I would suggest looking at what motor you have in your car, the 4.38 was meant for less powerful motors. If you have a more powerful motor and want to drive on the street I would go with the 4.12 most likely. I do remember talking to a guy in Italy, it seems the 4.38 with splined fourths are pretty common over there.

You can also still get the 15 tooth side gears from Weddle if you want to use those with your swing box. You would need the 10 tooth spiders out of your IRS donor though.

What is the letter code for the 8:35? K, O, or G ?

My wild guess would be G, but I don't know for sure. It was for the smallest motor they put in the beetles....1200 or 1300??

Hopefully Bruce will chime in, or maybe Dangerous

I've never seen the deviation number or the mating numbers on any late splined 4th R&P. In other words, nothing after about 1969 has them when you open up a trans.
If you happened to get a R&P new across the parts department counter, I believe it will have the numbers regardless of age, however I've never seen a late NOS R&P.

IMO, the strength of a R&P in a street car is only a concern when drag slicks are involved.

I'm curious whether the 8:35K was used ONLY in U.S. '66-'67 transporters, or was it used for other applications as well.

The 4.37 K has been used in other applications. I had a late splined 4.37 K up until a couple of years ago. Splined 4ths are after 68-69, so it couldn't have been in a Bus.
I thought a Bus used a 3.88 R&P, then added the reduction boxes to bring it's ratio down.

I never saw a Bus with factory-installed 3.88. Most had 4.12 ..
I always wondered why 4.37K in the last two years. Did they decide the gearing was too tall after the change to 1.26 reduction gears? .. or perhaps they went to a taller tire?

Thank you for the answers, I switched case, so I will start wit .6 shim and make a patern.

It is a G. Meanwhile I checked a few AM gearboxes and the are all G8x35.

More often than not, it will be a .6 shim ..
