Transaxle id needed.
Any info on the 3 letters with 3 dots (LAP***)above the trans code. Also does AO=Karman Ghia 70? Thanks...

The AO code seems to be common to '68 ghia swing axle/4-speed (based on two very original looking parts hulks I've seen)...and the re-stamping usually means that somebody has had it open and it is no longer factory specification.
Like most transmission stamping, it can only suggest what it was in the way back.

The second digit is a 0, not an O.
Once they passed gearbox number 9,999,999 they started back at 0. In other words, they didn't add a digit for gearbox number 10,000,000
There's no difference between a Beetle and Ghia swing axle gearbox before 69.
It's a 68 swing axle gearbox, long axles, 4 lug drums, 12V, 4.12 R&P if it was used with a 1500 engine.

I see, so it has been converted to wide five in order to run in my '65 when the bug was switched over to 12V.
