002 Shift Rails

Still learning more and more, but I do have a question about the 002 shift rails. Specifically the 1-2 shift rails found in the 3 and 5 ribs transaxles. There is an early version (no lines) and the later version (single line), but this time period the sliders were the same width. I know the later version has a longer throw, but not by how much.
It's confusing to me as the T1 boxes had just the single line 1-2 rail during this time period and didn't switch detents during this time.
When is the correct time to use the early and late 002 1-2 shift rails? I ordered a single line rail and should get it today, so maybe later I can post some pictures and see where the difference lies.
