Track Car Tranny Prophylaxis

Post by TOOF »

I am building my 1970 bug with a 1641 for 24 hrs of lemons. I have the stock trans. I pulled the nose off and gave it new seals and bushings so it would stop leaking.

Is there anything else that can be done? Some have said, "run synthetic oil". Anything else?
My back up plan is to have a spare on standby.

TIA,

Kyle

Make sure that the little vent hole at the nosecone is clear (especially important if you used any sealant on the gasket). I found on my trike that sustained high speeds will cause enough heat to build up pressure that can push lube past even new final drive seals - next time I have it out I'm going to drill & tap the case for a larger vent hose.

Good call. After I re sealed it I saw a thread about tapping it and running a hose. Wish I did that when I had it off.

Probably won't be an issue (I was going 90+ for hours on end in hot weather) but if you get some F.D. seal leakage you'll know why ;)
