Post by Passatman »

Good day Guys,

Does anyone know if there is a 5 speed 091 kit with wide gears.

VW made a 5speed trans for the Vanagon that has wider gears. The whole trans is longer. I using one in my buggy. I bought a use 091/1 4speed side shifter and converted using to a 094 5speed using parts from Weddle Industries.
The only 5speed conversion of a Bus noscone shift transaxle I know of is, Gene Berg's setup. It based on using 113/002 width gears.
Here is a picture showing the differences in length of a 091, 091/1 4speed, and a 094 5speed trans.

Another option is using a Subaru 5speed using a reversed ring & pinion from http://www.subarugears.com/ Todd also makes a adapter to use a VW engine with the Subaru transaxle.

Well i want the box to build a 091 5 speed for my daily driver bug. Does anyone know if the 113/002 gears can hold up to say 300whp - 500whp.

There's nothing given up with 002 width gears. We've drag raced tons of them with 400+ hp engines, and breakage of any 3rd or 4th gear is extremely rare. There seems no measurable extra life or strength to slightly wider 091 gears.

I agree..I also question how much stronger the 094 gears are as well. Some, of course, but not a huge difference, imo. There is a big difference in strength between the 113/early 002 10 tooth mainshaft versus the late 002 9 tooth. The 9 tooth is a lot stronger.

I don't if I missed something and this is coming from someone who knows next to nothing about these transaxles. I thought the advantage was the full size reverse gear for the off road crowd. The 5 speed and closer gearing would just be icing on the cake. At least that's why I have lusted for one and even know they exist  I would think like what jsturtlebuggy has done. Can any one else comment who has done this or knows about this.

Yes, the strong reverse is very good, but most off of the off roaders here do not want the extra length on the 5-speed, so they just use the 4 speed boxes. A lot of them do not even use 4th gear. The extra length is a PITA to fit into a rail buggy chassis.
