091 5speed box

Post by Passatman »

Good morning guys
I am looking into the possibility of doing a 5 speed gearbox with the 091case and a 1600 bellhouse for my t1 engine. I would like to know if the information I got about this bellhousing shortening the gearbox by half an inch or a full inch is true.

Normally, an 002 bell housing and input shaft would be used to mount the Type I engine.

That's what i will be using on the 091 gearbox case with a 5 speed kit. Just wanted to know it the setup will reduce the overall length of the gearbox and if so, by how much.

You shorten the input shaft by about 14mm and use a 002 bellhousing.
The 091 and 002 cases are the same length overall... (There may be a 2mm difference in the BH's.)
The hockey stick on the 091 also may be longer but I've never measured to confirm

The main case of a 002 and 091 are the same length like has been said. The Bell housing length are the same too. The 091 bell housings are made for a 228mm flywheel and use a different starter. The bolts and studs for mounting the engine to the 091 bell housing are 10mm longer. A 091 gear carrier is approx. 10mm wider (longer) for the wider transmission gears. Hockey sticks are the same length for both 002 and 091.
Not nothing what 5speed kit you are installing, if it going to be longer then a stock 002.
When I cut down the input shaft so it does not bottom in the end of the crankshaft, I cut off 11mm from the end.

FYI: Just measured an 091 and 002 gear carrier. The 091 is 8mm deeper.

Hi Passatman is this the 5 speed kit you are thinking of using ? I was also pondering the use of this for my off road car. Would be nice to have a 5 speed and the stronger reverse gear of the 094. would need to address the side shift though
