Berg 5 disassembly
I'm currently working on a first generation Berg 5.
How are you getting the 5th clutch gear off? How about the gear on the pinion shaft? Does the common VW cam gear puller for the crankshaft work?

Re: Berg 5 disassembly
There's a short gear puller that was sold alongside the kit .. or perhaps it came with the kit. Far away, or I'd take a photo.

If you do not have the puller, can you press the mainshaft out of the gear carrier? I cannot remember as it has been many years and I have only taken one apart. Pablo is correct, they do/did sell a puller, which would be the best way, but you might be able to save some money and press it out. Also, if you "warmed up" the hub, you might also use a air hammer on it if you are very careful.

You are right! The main shaft will press out of the ball bearing and the 5th gear hub at the same time.
I have a puller I can modify to simultaneously pull 5th gear off the pinion shaft while pressing the MS out.
If I can remember, I'll take pics of the setup for future reference.

Not sure if that will reach around the hub or not...

Didn't work.Bruce2 wrote:You are right! The main shaft will press out of the ball bearing and the 5th gear hub at the same time.
There's a woodruf key that will prevent 5th gear's inner race and the MS ball bearing from being pressed off.
You have to use some kind of puller to get the 5th gear clutch gear off the main shaft.

Re: Berg 5 disassembly
I did one this past week end.
Just used a 2 legged puller that was cleared to fit behind the idler gear,
once the bearing retainer was removed.

You may want to invest in the versatile Kukko puller with various length arms.
