I've got a few 113 311 247A synchros, which are for Nov 61 to 66.
What's the synchro for up to Nov 61? Is there a 113 311 247?
What is a 113 311 247B for? It's a lot larger in dia than the 247A, so I don't think it's related.

Re: First gear synchros
Are you sure there is a 113 311 247B? The 247C replaced the 269A for a short time (narrower slots), before returning to the 269A (for 1st gear only). You may have a few synchros that were factory-installed, and not generally available from the dealer.
If 113 311 247B exists, it was probably for short term usage in factory assembled transaxles only.
Isn't prior to '61 the splitcase transaxle? I'm very hazy on these after so many years, but I think the cone angle was different .. so there may have been a 113 311 247 for these, with the 247A for the first tunnel transaxle.

Re: First gear synchros
To answer your last question first, the full synchro gearbox first appeared in Type 2s in May 59. It wasn't until Aug of 60 that Type 1s got it.
A split case gearbox will never have any parts with 311 in the middle 3 digits. Full crash has 307 and synchro 2-3-4 has 309 for the parts. That means a 113 311 247 or 247A is for tunnel type transmissions.
I did some more research and found a reference in the 61-65 manual. 113 311 247 was used from the start of tunnel trans up to Mar 62. This part number change happened at the same time they changed 3rd-4th synchros from 113 311 295 to 113 311 295A. The feature change is shown in pics in the topic I started on 3rd-4th synchros:
http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... &p=1179801
I took a pic of the 247Bs I have.
The 3 slots for the shift plates are 10.5mm wide (9.0mm on a 247A and also presumably the 247).
I checked their fit on a late idler gear and they ride a little high, around 1.8mm gap.

Re: First gear synchros
the 247 is similar to the 247A but has a chamfer in the external diameter to clear a shape in the "spring" housing in the slider inner gear. the 247 b is a later one, for bigger gears.
if you do not need the 247A here in italy there are still a lot of transaxles to repair with them. i had some of them, but may need more in the future. i hope someone will put them in production...

Re: First gear synchros
I compared a 247 to a 247A and to make a 247 is easy. Take a 247A and turn a chamfer on the OD with a lathe. Note, the chamfer is not 45º, it is 60º.
It sounds like the progression was
247
247A
247B
269A
Then if Paul is right, it went 247C then 269A again.

Re: First gear synchros
or simply use a later inner drum. 247A is better, more stable.
