I wonder why no one's experimented with pinning the two parts together. Drill through the cone and gear in 3 spots with a small carbide drill. Easily serviceable, no distortion.

I've really been thinking about trying that out lately. The pinning doesn't have to hold all the strength, just add strength to the joint.
I also think that lighter welding (no heavy discoloration warping) with stock gears adds enough strength for those.
