replacing the shift rod

Post by JHHeiger »

Last year I rebuilt the transmission in my 62 beetle, replaced the shift rod, guide bracket and the bushing. Tried my best to reinstall and adjust the shifter but was never happy with it. So i took the shifter off again yesterday, and the rear coupling cover and discovered that my problem seems to be that the shifter hits the side of the hole because the 'cup' and the set screw hole in the new rod are off by a little bit when compared to the old one. So it has to twist further than the sheet metal on the tunnels top will allow freely. Incidentally, i replaced the shift rod because i couldn't break the set screw free, drilled it out and buggered up the hole. Any body else deal with this?

I add an adjuster so I can make the shifter work flawlessly ,

Using this I can lengthen, shorten or change the angle of the coupler to align everything perfectly. Mike McCarthy

I made my own but by the time I bought the bolt and two nuts the price was close to this. Go for it, you'd have a hard time beating it!
