091 super diff.

Post by seabeebuggy »

I have a 091 that I like to put in my dune buggy. I have a 5 rib 02 in it now and it cost 3500$ for sand. I need a street trans that can handle my turbo and the 31'' tires. I have snapped pro built weddle t1 trans like tooth picks. I just like to get better street speeds and not do 4k rpms and up to do it. I am thinking a super diff with 930 cv flanges should work. Will it? also is it easy to put a super diff in? I have never worked on a trans before but I am good at mechanical things.

some 091's had super diffs but not all of them came stock that way.
A diff is easy enough to change but you'll need to check your contact pattern and possibly reset your pinion depth/backlash. Those with more experience than myself can chime in on your chances of not needing to do this.

It does not bolt up exactly the same the 091 bellhousing it built different. I would use a 3 or 5 rib bellhousing and shorten the input shaft 3/8". This allows you to use a bug starter instead of a 091 starter.
Some 091 transaxles have a factory superdiff but they are pretty rare here in the states.
For the strongest VW transaxle look for an 091 midshift they are strongr in several ways over a nosecone shift 091.
good Luck
