Best trans for a 350-400hp Turbo

Post by 63busguy »

Buddy is going nuts and want to build a huge turbo engine. I think a bus is what he needs to keep it on one piece. Im thinking 091 with 930s but since Im unfamiliar with a bus to bug conversion what else is needed for it to work right? What else is needed to be done to the trans to survive drag/slicks in a heavy type I?

Sounds like a drag car, but you're not clear.

Custom hybrid 091/002 is what is generally made for this application. Probably a number of threads on it already .. at least a dozen different internal mods. Please don't tell us he's on a budget.

He is just a kid and really has no idea. I am trying to find out how much it will cost and bring him down to reality. He thinks a stock SSC trans will live, HA!

Now that's funny...It costs a lot to go that fast even somewhat reliably, like 6-$8K from what I've seen.

Funny enough there is a post here with someone stating that they ran over 500HP on a single side cover gearbox.

Im sure with no wheel hop and 165s it will last due to no traction.

A (real) automatic (bus or T3/T4) can probably deal with abuse best, can be beefed up to take stupid power. The late bus 090s with the cast iron diff housing strongest, find an Audi trans can.

Requires a rear subframe w/the framehorns chopped out, but that is pretty minor work at those power levels.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Transaxle Engineering in LA can build you an auto that will handle 1,000 HP.Very good people to deal with.

A Porsche 930 or a G50 should do the trick and is less expensive than a built transmission.

Just my 0.00000002 cents....

x2 on G50. The Skinne car in Norway uses a G50/50 with the dog box kit shown in my avatar

Lowest cost approach says:
  • Cut weight. Both over-all weight and rotating weight. Hole saw, Sawzall, aluminum whatever, throw things out, lighter battery, put the driver on a diet, etc.
Do whatever it takes to eliminate any possibility of wheel hop.
    Lightened flywheel and clutch assembly.
Something to slow down the engagement of the clutch.
