shifter

Post by lucas »

I have a vw powered trike that the only gear I can get is reverse. I took the shifter apart to replace the bushing and cannot get any gear except for reverse. Any suggestions? Lucas

Did this problem occur after you replaced the bushing or was the bushing replacement an attempt to repair the problem? If it worked before you replaced the bushing I would remove the shift rod and install an adjuster,
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Shift-Rod- ... p/5528.htm it allows you to lengthen, shorten or move the shifter socket right or left. I have been using them on my cars so they shift perfectly every time.Mike McCarthy

I'm assuming this is a rear-engine trike - if it's mid-engine your shifter setup is totally different than stock.
If your shifter uses the stock-style Reverse lockout plate, it needs to be installed so that the little "ski-jump" ramp is up and to the right, like this:

If that's correct, adjustment follows the procedure(s) here:

You probably have some sort of custom shift rod in your trike and it may be tweaked, in which case the aftermarket adjustable section may help. But first take a close look at the coupler between the rod and the "hockey stick" that goes into the trans nosecone, they've been known to work loose and become misindexed - you don't necessarily need a new coupler, often all it takes is a small weld to correct the problem. Double check that the setscrew(s) on the coupler are properly seated in the divot(s) provided for it/them in the hockey stick (and shift rod if it's pre`65 style).
