Re: 1978 bus automatic transmission/gear ratio
I've misplaced my Type III Bentley manual, but poking around over at theSamba I found the following:
The "NF" 010 automatic transmission used in `76-`79 buses had a 4.09:1 ring & pinion, and a 1:1 high gear.
Other 010 transmissions come with a 2.71 1st and 1.50 2nd, or else 2.55/1.55
Low gear on a Vanagon automatic is 2.71:1, I believe the bus trans was the same.
=> I'm assuming the bus is 2.71/1.50/1.00

According to Helmut Zeidler:
1st gear 2.55
2nd gear 1.45
3rd gear 1.00
Reverse 2.46
R & P final 4.09
Wasserboxer Vanagon autoboxes got ATF cooler lines and coolers up front. Good for longer transaxle life than earlier air cooled torque converters. Adaptable to earlier baywindow busses also.

Re: 1978 bus automatic transmission/gear ratio
Thank you for the info J.R. This helps a bunch. Now on to question #2, Will the auto handle 150 HP mild off-road (sand and logging road's, stock suspension) in a glass buggy???WestyPop wrote:According to Helmut Zeidler:

You may be better off finding a good used auto vs rebuilding yours.pablovent wrote:Hi, I read this old post......But I need replace Ring and pinion in my vw westfalia CJ 1977 010 auto trans, in this post appear 4.09??
