Re: what cleaner in an aqueous parts washer
Got a new to me used parts washer here recently for the new shop. So some guys are using simple green in them? What about purple power? I would like to try to use something a little more environmentally friendly. And something that wont kill me with repeted exposure. It's a pretty good size washer, 20 gal maybe.

i just got a new parts washer also and thought about using kerosene, will the simple green and other "mix with water" solutions not cause metal parts to rust if left in the tank to soak?

Mudshine - it's citrus based smells like oranges and cleans like no other without any skin irritation.

I used simple green for a year but disposal is pain in ass. I finally ended up w/ a heated jetwasher and use alkaline soap for non-ferrous. There are no disposals, just keep adding water if low....you have to rinse w/ fresh water while in the cabinet anyway. Just matter of cleaning the accumulated mud after some use and dump the same water back in. Very EPA friendly. Hand-friendly. Has timer so you can do something else while the parts are washing. You don't need a very large jetwasher for VW work. The toploader one is plenty. I lowered the grill on mine so VW cases or trans feel right at home.

"ZEP" industrial purple oxidises the aluminum parts to a dark color if left for longer than few minutes on the part (probably due to asidic content).
I am about to finish a whole 5 gallon jug ($35)of this detergent. Did pistons and jugs cleaning, mag cases, moped engines ect.
All have darkened more or less before the layer of grease was cut. I am not sure if i like it. Looking for something safer for aluminum
PS: Simple Green did the same thing to the aluminum

Re: what cleaner in an aqueous parts washer
good to know, I just picked up a used parts tank today actually, along w/ some steel tables. Not too happy with it, I was told it was a shop unit, deffinatly an old chinese one, but the price on the tables made up for it. I didn't save any money, but it was delivered so I came out ahead, but not by as much as I expeted to.
It came w/ 2 gallons of ZEP in the wrong jugs (one was a purple degreaser) although I'm not even convinced that is what it is. seems to be solvent not water based, surprised the pump still works (tank is 10 years old) so I am haveing a hard time knowing what it actually is. Iam gonna drop a junk bug head in it and see how it looks tomorrow. you saying it oxidizes while ur cleaning or the next day?
argh

We buy ZEP brand white powder parts washer cleaner in 5 gallon buckets. It takes about half a gallon of soap for each tank clean out. We go about 2 weeks between servicing the machine (cleaning the jets, flushing tank, new solution) depending on the use. We have an in ground sump that we dump in to. We have the sump serviced every 6 to 8 weeks to be safe.

Re: what cleaner in an aqueous parts washer
I would like to clarify. Zep is not bad as far a detergent goes. I'Il usually spray it on, and work it with nylon brush for minute. Once it develops a gunky paste i leave it to penetrate for 20 minutes, maybe respray it....wait, and simply hose down. Makes dirty job easy- its a lazy way. I do it on the paper on the floor to cut the worst gunk. Use 100 percent undilluted for steel and iron, it cuts any oil, gunk from trans, or even byproduct juice from 2 stroke bike expansion chambers (worst than tarp).
.....I would like to have a same option for aluminum- just spray it on and leave it.
But if zap or green left on aluminum- lets say late evening to morning- it will color aluminum...
...secondly i just opened up the cv joint. I dont even know where to start. The grease is so thick it will brake razor blade on it. Maybe bucket of kerosine overnight?

DO NOT PUT THE CV IN UR PARTS TANK! it will ruin all the fluid, that grease is impressive stuff. I clean em by hand w/ a roll of paper towl after disassembly, then take the film off w/ a rag and a spray bottle of paint thinner. takes damn near a full roll of paper towl to do 4

So ZEP purple industrial cleaner degreaser will ruin aluminum. I am probably gonna buy 12 gallons of ZEP 505 fast or whatever it is called and see how it works. a bit cheaper than filling hte tank with paint thinner, and a bit safer too. Hopefully this stuff dries reasonably fast, and lasts a while. Some cleaners stop workin once they get dirty, paint thinner however keeps on going a while. I really hope the 505 doens't turn out to be a one time use type deal. I 'll try a gallon in a bucket for a while and see how it owkrs out. at $240 for 10 gal of the pro stuff, I will hold off on that commitmetn!

Just a word of caution. prolonged exposure of aluminum and magnesium alloys to Simple Green can cause hydrogen embrittlement and make the parts crack. We are no longer allowed to use these cleaners in Army aviation for that reason. They also included many other off the shelf cleaning solutions in the same restriction list to include Purple Power. I use PD-680 in mine but I also wear gloves and a splash shield while using the parts washer.

Re: what cleaner in an aqueous parts washer
The ZEP 505 was extremly thick,a nd my garage is unheated, so I didn't want to set my pump on fire trying to move it. I went solvent, 15 gallons of mineral spirits and called it a day. works well enough.

Usually use Surfex HD mixed 10-1 with water, seems more than strong enough for most jobs at that in a heated washer, it'll also emusify general dirt and mud/etc which most solvents don't.
