CSK blind rivets

Post by Ol'fogasaurus » Fri Feb 26, 2016 12:10 am

Rivets commonly known as blind, POP, pull and several other names are commonly used by us amateurs and pros alike. Besides the most common heads on the rivets there are also flush head blind rivets; they usually have 100° heads but there are/might be other angles probably available. If you are countersinking materials that is one thing but flush riveting multiple layers if thin materials dimpling each layer (there are tools designed to do this) is the most common way to set the flush rivets in multiple layers of material.

Usually in flush riveting they are set the head a shade higher than flush and a flush cutting tool is used to mill/cuts them smooth to the skin.

I was watching a show on rebuilding mid-60s and older camping trailers (Flytecamp in Bend OR) the other day. They were reskinning one of the trailers with CSK pop-rivets to which I rolled my eyes as they would leak but no… they had a tool that flush cuts them rotary while at the same time the friction melts the material into a water tight configuration.

I have tried to find the product but will have to watch re-runs to come up with the name of the tool as they did mention it. If anyone know of the tool could they post something on it please.

Also it seems that there is also tools for double flushing pop rivets if I understood what I saw correctly (do a search).

Thanks Dale. I am very aware of most of the types of blind/POP rivets, at least those designed more than a few years ago. We were not allowed to design to them but we were very aware of them... to say the least.

It is the flush cutting tool that I am most interested in. Usually rivets, POP or solid are not installed flush or, worse, set too deep. The set too deep problem there is not much you can do about that other than reworking the installation. The ones with the CSK head, that protrude a bit, those are then shaved flush. It is the style of rotary shaving tool that is used that makes the blind rivets water tight after shaving; that is what I was interested in.

I spent several hours watching the show "flippin RVs" which is the Flytecamp site. Didn't see the same program yet. I am also still looking for the flush cut tool for CSK POP/blind/pull rivets but I did find some things you might like to peruse.
