I haven’t heard anyone talk about weld studs (capacitive discharge – welding) here so I thought I would bring it up; the URL shows some of the styles but not all of them. They are used a lot for panels and things like boxes. There is a type of weld stud besides the threaded type that is shaped like a bunch of bubbles up and down the stud and they used a spring clip type of mating part that is a push-pull installation.

Re: Stud welding/welded studs
Hey Lee , we have a stud gun welder at work but i havnt played with it very much .I think it welds up to 1/4 in studs .We rent it out to an astrailian fellow that travels here and he realy likes it . From what i understand the shear wieght of a stud like this is not very good.the shipyard uses the type that you have to drill a pilot hole for ( mainly for small electrical boxes) but this type of stud gun uses the 22 blank cartradge .I havnt seen the type with the bubbles yet .

No, they are more of a tension type of fastener and it seems we used them in gangs. It has been too long since I designed to them so I forget most of the why with the exception for the one push fit I alluded to. Like I said, boxes and I think electrical could benefit from them.
I don't think I have ever heard of the 22 blank method before. You learn something new every day.

These are still around as NAPA sells them. The have double stick tape on the bottom. I have one on my buggy engine that has been there for probably 10 years now. I forget just when I put it on.
