What not to do in welding

Postby Jadewombat » Thu Jan 19, 2017 7:50 pm

OK, this is NOT my work--just figured I'd share this and not really sure where else to park it. The correct way would've been to cut a v-groove with a landing, root passes with 3 spacers about 3/16", and then several hot and filler passes to fill the v and grinding down each time to make sure there's no porosity in the welds.

I have no idea what these guy(s) were doing or thinking here. Aside from the correct welds on the flange (far left) the other rows have no penetration--just blobs sitting on top of other blobs. These manifolds are pressured up on the oil rig to several thousand psi with drilling fluid (mud) on the rig. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing when that happens. Scary stuff.

That is no way that was done by a professional welder...
A guy with a Harbor Freight welder, I would accept.
Looks like a failed attempt at crack repair.

"What do you mean it didn't pass NDT "
I've worked in Aus on gas pipelines for 15 years , first as a LV fitter then switched to hydrotesting , I've never seen anything that bad , I wouldn't even use that for the intake of a pump let alone on the pressure side.
looks like a cleaner on nightshift had a go at burning a few rods . no one around to even set up the welder .
No matter where you go , there you are !
