Fair enough, Jake.
The bearings are on the way. I'm still trying to locate a 2L rod for comparison and fitment. Methinks Don is looking at the donor rods, too maybe not a bad idea since they are only 0.002" wider than the stock 2L rod; but they are bloody long, so maybe Don will move his powerband up past 8500 . However, I think they may be of powdered-metal construction. I'll have to look into that...(or Don will )

Bearing material is CL-66, same as standard Chebbie bearings.
THose rods are about the same weight as type 4 rods also.....750gs.
I'm looking at info now..........
5.9", Hmmmm. That still would put me a 1.87 rod ratio, still too high
for my needs.
My crank isn't nitrided(old DPR product), so I'm not looking at turning
past 6500............OK, maybe 6800! Still haven't ordered the revlimiter.
I want it to suck on the heads from the git-go and run out of steam
around that limit.
I'm looking fer 11 to 11.5 CR and running premo street gas.
Go ahead, tell me it can't be done......

But that's stock. Both Clevite and Sealed Power make replacement bearings (which would be the same as Chebbie replacement bearings ). I don't know the reputation of the Fed. BTW, these engines regularly see 300-400-500+ HP by crazy guys who don't mind turning up the boost. Even in stock form, these engines produced twice the power of the VW 2L.

Bearing width is fine. Bearing outer diameter can be dealt with. Thanks for the heads up about the tangs Seriously, though...nothing a spot of weld prior to reboring the big-end can't fix. The new grooves can be hand-filed if careful.
So...from what I've seen and measured, if anybody running a stock 71mm crank and 2L rods wanted a better bearing set, they could do it with minor mods to the rods.
Since I'm not so much interested in the 2L rods as they are a tad short for my needs, I'm still looking at a few different rod options. I'll talk more the more I know more. mmm'K? I will go on the record to say that I WILL use these bearings.

They sound like either the Mitsu 3000GT rods or the early90s 3SGTE , celica and MR2 turbo , one variant came with a blower?.
The factory rods can have the bolts flipped, and both original motors handled tons of boost fine.
They're too long for anything I'd ever do.
OTOH, at 2", the cosworth rods at 5.7" are wide enough and so on... if you can get the bolt heads to clear (no idea what strokes would work)
(Oddly Jakes shadow told me about those awhile back when he still dared to appear here, he acted like it was a huge secret too... If you look at rod size charts, they're te only ones that work out, not bloody rocket science.)
