Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
I am about halfway through welding the passenger side channel in and ran out of wire. Isn't that always the way. I'm sure that once I get more wire I will run out of gas next. ARGHH!!
Pics to come once it is welded in.

I finally got more wire. Here is where it sits as of this evening.
I still need to scab in a few small pieces on the bottom of the b-pillar.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
Thanks for the compliment Leather, but it has been anything but easy. A bunch of time has been spent sitting and staring, trying to figure out how everything was supposed to fit together.
For anyone reading this and wondering how the quality of the replacement channels are, I can say that the ones made by Klokkerholm are fairly decent. I noticed that I will need to cut the outside edge of the front of the channel so that it will fit flush with the outside of the firewall. I will post a couple of pics after I get it cut and moved in. As it sits now the front inner wheelwell will not sit flush against the bottom of the firewall.

Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
The passenger side is all welded in. It should only need a light coat of filler before paint, hopefully.
More to come as I get it done.
This is inside the front wheelwell.
Here is the rear quarter. It has a minor little shelf because I didn't take my time when fitting it and also welded too fast. I just tell myself it is there for run off purposes and that it adds character. Its only an old baja, after all.
The drivers side should go faster since it is the same pieces only they all bend the other way. If you all want to save me time from having to post pics just look at all the earlier pics backwards and I am pretty sure that will be what they will look like.More to come as I get it done.

Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
I had to take a few weeks off from removing all the rot. I started back on it the other day and it just got worse. If you notice the floating screwdriver handle above the body mount. Thats another panel Ihad to order.
The PO had this side repaired in the past also. Replacement crossmember was put in on top of the old rotted metal without removing any of the old stuff.
And of course the always present lower a-pillar rot.
Panels for the rear wheel well are on order, so now I get to play the wait on UPS game. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I had to do the same on the back of my baja, both sides. But I just made panels out of an old door skin.

I probably should have done that also. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment. Fitting aftermarket repop panels is starting to be one of my favorite past times.

Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
I am still making progress little by little on the body rot repairs. I haven't done much metal work over the past two months. Work and unexpected family living downstairs has slowed it down quite a bit. Here are some more pics as of earlier today.
The D/S channel is in. I still need to replace the rear crossmember on that side plus patch a few small holes in the same area. Since everyone likes pictures here are a couple more just so you all can see my enormous amount of work space not to mention my about to be dead compressor. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
I welded the D/S lower a-pillar in Monday night. I measured from hinge pocket to hinge pocket about six times. Going from a-pillar to door back and forth to make sure the a-pillar matched the door. All the measurements checked out just fine so I welded about four inches of the top of the a-pillar and welded the bottom of it to the heater channel. Then I went to put the door on. You guessed it, it was about 1/4" too short between the hinge pockets. CRAP!!!!
Last night I cut the weld on the top of the a-pillar patch and stipped all the glass out of the door. I got the door hung and aligned as good as possible with the worn hinge pins. Tonight I hope to cut a small piece of metal to bridge the gap on the a-pillar and weld it back in.
Wish me luck.

You have definitely paid your dues on this one. What you have done takes a lot of time and patience. Is this a custom or restoration job?

Once all the metal is replaced it will be baja'd.

Re: Body rot (pic heavy)
a little more progress. there is still some minor cutting and filling needed at the lower door hinge on the inner wheel well panel.
The welds at the front of the a-pillar are ugly as sin, but that is what carpet is for.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
