Half moon vents ... with aluminum trim.
Anyone know where to find a set of half moon vents with the aluminum or chrome trim piece around the lip? My original ones were rotted out to the point where the trim had little (if anything) to hold on to, so I replaced them with a set of plain black ones without trim (all I could find), and really don't like them. I can't find a site selling the ones with trim to save my life.

Damn, I was afraid of that when I tossed the old ones. They were REALLY rotted out, but I could probably have salvaged them if I tried. I just snagged a good condition used pair off eBay that the seller mistakenly listed as coming off a '69. The price is right & the trim is intact, so why correct him.
They should look really good after I gently take the trim off, clean the louvers, rattle-can them a nice gloss black, and then polish & re-attach the trim with some adhesive putty before popping them in.
When I first got my Bug and began to undo all the Cal Look stuff the last owner did, I was undecided about some of the trim work. I've decided that the plain black rubber around all the windows has to go, and I want a set with the chrome beading. These trimmed vents will look good with that.
Of course, the plain black vents I have in there now would look real good with a safety yellow rattle-can job to match the body. You can never have too much yellow

KarentheBug,
I saw some in LA somewhere, but also found some on-line at California Pacific - http://www.jbugs.com/category/vw-bug-bo ... 68-72.html
They appear to be all chrome, but I'm sure you could paint them if you don't like that look.

Meh, the all chrome ones are a dime-a-dozen. And JBugs pissed me off repeatedly with poor service so I avoid them unless they're the ONLY option for getting what I want at an affordable price.
The stock ones I found on eBay should be good with some clean-up work and a little light restoration. Even if they've got rot under the chrome trim like my old ones did, some putty to build the plastic back up before a rattle-can paint job & epoxy to hold the trim back down should do the trick.
I'm not someone who goes mental for "it has to be original, it has to be new old stock, it has to be German, etc." when it comes to my Bug. Half of it is original, a quarter of it is reproduction, and a quarter of it is Chinese. I put the premium stuff on when either A) It's the only way to get the "look" I want, or B) It's the only way to get acceptable quality (like for safety / drivetrain related work). Anything else I just get what works and rock on.
