Flywheel oxy/waterboxer - 914 gearbox

Post by Rob Habets »

Hi
Which flywheel can i use for a oxy/waterboxer combined with a porsche 914 gearbox, with either a 215 or 228mm clutch?
Waterboxer, porsche 914 or type 4?

Regards, Rob

Any of them, but the non-914 flywheels need the input shaft bushing installed by a machinist.
(simple 5 minute mod drill/ream to press fit for the $5 bearing)
The 901 input shaft doesn't go all the way into the crank, like a T1 trans.

I run a 228, barely worn at all after 200+K miles. You could still barely read the painted on SACHS markings on the friction surface.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

So the ring-gear offset is identical on all of those flywheels?
The input shaft bushing position is the only difference?

Identical, no.
Close enough for good starter engagement (tooth mesh/depth)?
Yes.

The "real"914 FW ring gear "projects" a lot more (longer teeth) but the starter engagement on the 228 I installed was fine, and its pretty much in the same place as any other T1/T4 12v ring gear, give or take a mm.
