101.6 CE heads

Ran into a post from 2006 from MNMIKE on CE heads that were purchased without drilled head bolts. they were drilled to a WBX pattern and possibly some welding was done to accomadate the 101.6 bore any one know how this project turned out. Built a 101.6x84 WBX now want to try it in an oxy. Has anyone else tried this with any type of head. JPM heads or other type of 101.6 finished heads are out waaaay too much oney.I Have a fully equipt machine shop and a aluminum welder and have been repairing and machining aluminum cylinder heads and blocks for years. modifying a set of VW heads is no big deal.

I've been away a long time, due to finances I sold the heads and many engine parts, and my street/racecar. I came back here to post since I've had a few PMs, recently Doug contacted me. CB sells the heads undrilled, not on website you have to call- they were not too much money 10 years ago or whenever it was. The studs get close to the edges of the upper bosses when you drill them for wbx pattern, if you don't want to weld them get creative. Hardened spacer across center studs was my thought there. Outer ones could be milled down flat so washers sit flat if studs can be cut to the right length. I don't think you could fly-cut very far without welding the airgap so if you want high compression you need high displacement. It has been too long for me to remember what the cc was on the chamber. Recently I bought a car again and am building a plain old 94 engine, the 101.6 are on the back burner. I think the way to go is JPM heads for a guy like me without machining skills this 101.6mm / 4" bore stuff gets expensive really fast and if you consider they bolt on its probably a cry once kind of deal.

Two pics of the work I did on a pair of undrilled 101.6 CB heads. Doug I see you posted you built a 101.6 Waterboxer. I would like to see the mods you made to do that. What pistons did you use? What kind of cylinders? Was this a street engine. Thanks

Hi All

built a 101.6x84 wbx engine for possible aviation use. scatt 84 mm crank.5.4 H beam rods machined and re bushed for for chevrolet 383 stroker pistons 10 CC dished.piston deck height was -.040 copper .040 head gaskets. larger valves and seats were installed the exhaust were chevrolet small block truck 1.5 dia with oversized stems reamed the wbx valve guides to fit the valves. intake were LS1 5.3 cut down to 1.600
with an assortment of offset valve keepers and locks to get the proper installed spring height.
Cylinders were Darton blank sleeves that were machined, bored and honed to fit the case and heads. they were more or less identical to the stock wbx sleeves other than the 101.6 bore. cam was I think a 2252
Dont remember for sure I tried several.carb was a holley 350 custom built intake manifold.( thats a whole nother story) ignition was a M&W ignition coil on plug out of Australia. since the engine was intended for aviation use the ignition system had a fail safe. 4 seperate systems in one box four hall triggers installed in a modified VW dist. four seperate coils on the plugs. the system was origionaly designed for race cars.so if something for one cylinder failed the engine would still run.since the engine would be a constant single speed engine it was dynoed at 3800 rpm and made an uncorrected easy 140 HP and 160+ at 5500RPM. The engine was never used in aviation the size of cooling system needed to keep it cool made the installation impractical.
I now am experimenting on air cooled engine for the same application.2332cc it makes 100 to 115 uncorrected HP@3800RPM as with many VW engines cooling is a problem up to 90 HP the engine will cool. past that it creeps up slowly. I am using MOFOCO heads with the extra cooling fins these are an improvement over the scatt heads i was using. I gained another 10 HP worth of cooling. the fan is a crank mounted backwards inclined blower fan.rated at 3500CFM the problem now is there is not enough mass to the heads and cylinders to dissipate the heat.as the bores on the engines got bigger the cooling fins on the cylinders kept getting smaller. I am in the processes of maching out 4 Biral cylinders with extra large cooling fins to try and dissipate some more of the heat. also switching to type 4 pistons with a 10 cc dish so I can run a zero deck height. thats also suppose to help on cooling. looked into Nickisil coatings instead of the iron liners. $200 per cylinder was a little steep for an experimental engine.
Still interested in the type 1 101.6 bore would like to have on in my daily driver. from the looks of the photos were you able to bore out the heads to 4.250??? without any welding.

Hi All

Its no fun to just go out and purchase a pair of heads.Its the challange of making things work that are not made to work. They appear to be a great pair of heads. just a touch outside of the price range for most builders.
