Is it stamped with a circular arrow kind of a recycle symbol? It was a wildly available (at that era) as a replacement part. As you noticed it is more modern than a standard "D" case that would of featured new cam bearings..

I didn't see a recycle symbol, where would it be? I got an approximate measurment for the stroke at 2 3/4'' -69 mm and the bore for the cylinder is approximatly 3 1/2'' - 85 mm. Thanks

\The fact that it is big passage machined makes me think it was a late case then sold as a replacement (over the counter universal) case. I've seen it before. It is not unusual, but certainly not a "D" era "D" spec case.
Unless worn that is a good case, modern design and alloy.

Can't be. You can't build a 1200 cc engine from a universal case. The bores for the cylinders are too big.

I say it was a factory VW built 1200cc engine made after 73. VW sold plenty of 1200s throughout the 70s. Through the 80s, all the Mexican VWs had 1200s.

What is the bore and stroke for the 1200 engine? This engine has a stroke very close to 69 mm. Do the code numbers ofer a clue? 1138140.

I agree it is unlikely to be a true "D" spec 64mm x 77mm but rather a 1300cc or 1600cc 'ish replacement. I doubt that case was ever 1200cc in displacement, only sold as a repair part suitable for.

Redacted. I am seeing reference to thickwall 77mm cylinder that fits the later bore offered from VW, that would suggest the ability to build 1200cc with later cases.

my 1972 standard 1200 engine is a D code, they are just like the other bigger CC cases, same size bores ect.

it was the earlier styled 1200s that had the smaller barrels

Found my caipers. Bore for the cylinders is 90mm ,stroke is 69mm.How do you tell the differance between a German and a Mexicon cases? Was the 1200 and the 1600 options that you pick between when you ordered a new car?

MX is often part of the casting (BR would be brazil), there is little difference between the OEM factory cases as they were all built to then current factory specification. In the case of mexico, I think they even got the german tooling post 1980.

While not old enough to order a car new back then, like most auto manufacturers one could order custom cars out of a dealer catalog. Engine size, color (also no color, primer only), driver's side, drivers ed version, and even voltage (6v, 12v).

So the 70's D cases are 1200 and the AE, AH ect. are 1600. Is that a fair assesment? Does anyone know what type of heads the 1200 had (sp / dp}? How about valve diameter?

Please don’t kick my ass but I’d like to ask a question about D codes.

It’s topic related with no dumb question to follow.

This is my engine code: DS728944

So what the heck is that. An S in there.

Respectfully;

Ned
