Welding on a as21 enigne casing?
It it at all possible to weld on a AS21 beetle t1 casing...? I think it's a combo of Aluminium and magnesium... so will a tig welder with ally rods work?

Folks have been welding AS41 for decades; AS21 is only slightly different (its AL content is actually lower) but it's still "weldable".
AS-21 = 2% Al, 1% Si
AS-41 = 4% Al, 1% Si

Can you use Aluminium welding rods or do you need special rods?

"Mag is difficult to weld. I recommend using helium, although it is not a requirement. Cleanliness is the key. With an engine case, you will have what amounts to metal that is impregnated with oil. You're going to have to get that out. Acetone will work well. I would soak the case in a degreasing bath. Mag should be welded with AC and a pure tungsten electrode. A good filler rod is AZ101. When you weld it, your electrode will need to actually be in the puddle. Because of the flammability of mag, make very sure there are no shavings anywhere near where you will be welding as they will burn first. My best advice to you is if you have never welded mag, find a shop that has and let them do it. Not to criticize you, but with little or no experience in this, you will probably just trash your case."

I'll look for a shop that does do mag welding... but good machine shops and welders are scarce. Last resort will be to try it myself

It's best left to an expert to be honest.Marc wrote:"Mag is difficult to weld. I recommend using helium, although it is not a requirement. Cleanliness is the key. I have practiced and practiced on a scrap case, wow it is difficult. Having a nice machine where you can set the start current, and pre/post flow has helped me a lot, but I still have lots of practice to go. I wouldn't consider trying to learn on a case I had to use, no way.
