Flywheel Puller?
So I'm getting everything ready to assemble the longblock of the 2110 for my KG. I've had the FW bolted up to the crank twice so far (trial assemblies to get an idea what I'll need for shims). It's a DPR crank and an 8 doweled cut-down stock FW. When it's been torqued down, it is very hard to get loose. I'm thinking of making some sort of device to help push the FW off the crank.
Suggestions?

Re: Flywheel Puller?
You could use an old flywheel as a puller, but you would have to add the pulling part below the fingers to push against the crank.

Flywheels don't have fingers. Did you mean use an old pressure plate?
That's an interesting idea. Might be able to use part of a gear-puller in the middle of a pressure plate to push on the end of the crankshaft. OK, I need to take a walk out to the shop and see what's laying around under the bench.

You're a Genius. Thank You.
All I need to do is take a little off the long leg of the puller and it will be centered.

I drilled and tapped two holes between the dowel holes.. screw in a bolt or set screw to back off flywheel.

There are no places between the dowel holes on an 8-dowelled flywheel...but if you choose this method don't forget to stone the end of the crank flat before reassembly, so the `wheel can sit fully against the crankshaft.

can't be done?Marc wrote:There are no places between the dowel holes on an 8-dowelled flywheel...but if you choose this method don't forget to stone the end of the crank flat before reassembly, so the `wheel can sit fully against the crankshaft.

Oh, little bolt holes...never mind. If it's a normal 8-dowel job with one offset dowel it'll always go back in the same place so any disrupted metal isn't likely to cause a problem, either.
Don't do this if you have a (shudder) cast flywheel, it may crumble apart if the material is narrowed down that much.

agreeeeed. if it is cast, please do not attempt!
and yes, these little tapped holes are very little (1/4-20), but at a torque of 200in/lbs, they produce about 3500lbs of 'jacking' force.

Re: Flywheel Puller?
I have a piece of angle iron that's drilled to bolt to the flywheel on the pressure plate bolt holes. Hole drilled in the center, and I use a piece of all thread with a bolt welded on the angle iron and one on the end. Its about 3 feet long so sometimes I can rock it side to side and the flywheel will come off. I'd post a pic, but I haven't used it in like 10 years and I'm not sure where it is.
