Sorry I haven't been on this site for awhile. I bought this from a couple in Indianapolis... in '04 I think.

Your car is NOT a Maxi Taxi. All Maxi Taxi's came with doors and identical hood fronts. They were built in Breeman, Indiana. The same company also built Mini Marx which was only a two seater. The Maxi Taxi's had four seats and flat chrome bumpers.

The OP original question was:
DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE ONE OF THESE?:
And Kelroy replied:

So he is not saying his is a Maxi.

Kilroy and I have talked before and his is not a Maxi Taxi. I have one similar to Kilroy's, that I bought new, and mine is a Cute T

made by Redhead Roadsters. There are several different "splashes" (off the origional Berry Mini T 4) around some differing by the cowl under the windshield; where Kilroys is arced, some are flat across.

There is (was) one for sale in TOS which even had a glass hard top on it. This is one that was up for sale a while ago;

Notice the flat cowl under the windshield.

None are Maxi Taxis

Yeah that's why I wrote that Lee.
Kilroy replied when Bubba asked if anyone had one and he said no but he had one of these.

Yours looks cool BTW............ 8)

I realize that but I was trying to add more; poor job I guess. Kilroy and I talk every so often and he has done a lot to his buggy. Looks pretty good the last time I got a picture of it. There have been several people who have thought they had a Maxi Taxi and I was trying to point out that what they had not only not a Maxi Taxi but they came in several different configurations. My buggy even has some of the same mold flaws that Kilroys buggy has; I'm left coast, he is mid-west... go figure.

I did see, up for sale on TOS, what looked exactly like a Maxi Taxi with the exception of; no doors! Dono who made it or modified it or what but it was for sale on TOS probablly within the last year.

This belongs to a customer of mine.
He thinks it is a Maxi but I've not seen one like it if it is so.

I don't think so. Look at the difference of width/depth in the body by the front passenger seating[ it is cut much lower than the Maxi Taxi which is pretty much straight across in the same area; again, no doors for the front. The cowl is similar to the orange buggy I posted. Granted, the front grill area is different, but anyone could cut the nose and either make a new one to simulate a radiator or put the cut off piece back on. There is another version similar to the Berry Mini T (the shortened PU version) but it is not a splash, but has a separate grill (I forget its name right now).

While it is hard to tell, the Maxi Taxi’s hood looks different. The front fenders are different especially as they join to the running boards. The buggy like your customer has; doesn’t really have flat running boards until after the seating area while the Maxi has the flat area start not too far behind the front of the door. The rear package area is different as well as the upper body lines around it.

I bet you that there are at least 20 splashes of the Berry Mini T, with different names that have been produced all over the country. When Redhead Roadsters went out of business, one of his customers got the molds so another version, with a different name, might be being built as we speak. When I talked to the owner of Redhead Roadsters; as I remember, he named several different companies that produced this same buggy using the same mold.

I almost forgot, there was another buggy I ran into (not literly) at a swap meet that had opening doors (as I remember) and looked similar to the Maxi Taxi; is was called a Sand Taxi. I didn't buy it because the right front fender was broken off and I didn't know how to fix or replace it.

Another four passenger buggy for sale;

By-the-way, that is a very nice start for a buggy that your customer has.

The decklid/engine cover on the orange car is very similar to the OP decklid on his Maxi.
The OP is a customer too and I took the picture he posted as well as this one.

Maybe there was a decklid vendor sold parts to more than one mfg.
Or Maxi sold decklids to others......who knows..... :wink:

When I bought my body I had the opportunity to buy the engine cover also [he had the mold for it] but it was never my idea to use the cover, instead I wanted to build my own steamer trunk version of the engine cover. I still have the molded fiberglass rear seat pan though. I would suspect that all these engine covers for the “touring” style of buggies may have (had) the same or similar contour shape and may have originally been “splashes” off the same mold. All this was a long time ago and I have often wondered where the original molds went. I would like to have a Berry Mini T “C-cab” myself or one of the Mini T’s that had a roadster tail on it. I’ve only seen pictures of one of them. I have also seen a Mini T style that someone had put an operating door on, kind of cool.

The “T” I was trying to think of in an earlier post was a Kellison. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... id=1018700 If you look on Dune Buggy Archives (http://www.dunebuggyarchives.com/), you just might find some additional information on “T” style buggies. I’ve tried to post something there but it doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Image

This is the second version of the engine cover rear frame because I had to put the radiator for the v-6 in the rear of the car, not under the rear deck lid, where the fuel tank ended up (the idea has been changed since then). The square tube frame was to look like the fold up mount that the late 20's and early 30's cars had that held the steamer trunks. I even had the cage held on by SS carriage bolts (notice the square holes).

Image

This is the engine cage during the lengthening process. It is made of .125 wall, 1 inch square tubing. The steamer trunk frame was made from 1/2 inch square tubing (I forget the wall thickness) and all bend were sand filled then heat bent over a home made jig.

The trunk had a SS piano hinge that ran full length across the joint and the opening was held open by an over center air shock hooked to lid by a stock ball socket (supplied) and a bolt and bracket for a lower pivot. It worked quite well but I never did get to skin it other than one time I put black card stock over the frame to see what the effect was going to look like. I think I still have the picture some where so if anyone wants to see it, I could scan it I guess.

I have a Maxi Taxi also. It belonged to my dad who built it. He was the retail distributor for the Pennsylvania and NJ areas for Bremans sports. He was selling Campers and trailers that were made in Indiana. One guy who worked with him kept telling him if you see any of those dune buggies out there bring one home. Well one day driving down the road he noticed Breman (sp) and so it began. as far as I know there was the maxi taxi and the Citation the citation was a shortened pan i think 14 1/2 or 15 inches. I know there was a fire at the business but not clear what happened to the business after the fire. The Citation and maxi were one of the best dune buggies of that time. They use to advertise by picking the front end off the ground by its fender or standing on top of the fender. Many dune buggies of that time were made very flimsy. I got all excited when I found your picture. My dad bought a fully assembled Maxi Taxi from breman that looks alot like the photo. it had a velvet sprayed under carriage and Anderson mags and aluminum model A lanterns on the side as I recall. Id be happy to try and answer and other questions but that was a long long time ago. I was about 16 at the time and helped with the drive out and back to Indiana. Im now almost 58. Yours Truly, Ron Washburn ( [email protected] )

Ps a few photos of my car can be viewed at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/washie/set ... 916911559/

not sure where they are located on a mac. sorry.

I've always kind of wanted a Maxi myself... few and far between and cost a bunch. When I was looking for my first buggy I found a Sand Taxi (There was the marquee name that was on the grill badge) but it had a broken fender; no one knew much about it so with the right front fender missing and no knowledge of it I passed on it; I wish now I had of bought it now.

Washie, nice looking ride!
