'74 exhaust clamps
Hey all - I just had an OE-style exhaust installed on my '74. Everything went fine, but the shop that installed it mentioned that the kit was missing the clamps that go around the exhaust pipes where they meet up with the muffler.
They're held on by the brackets, but I'm sure there is a leak around the joint between the exhaust pipes and the muffler. What part do I need for this, and where can I get it?
Thanks!

Those are the exact same clamps as the ones shown on the green Thing above. These are standard exhaust clamps that can be found at any VW parts vendor. Just go to CIP1, Mid-America, Jbugs, SoCAl, etc, etc., and do a search for "exhaust clamps". Note that the clamps won't stay shiny for long. They will oxidize and rust in short order after installation. I don't know if they make these in stainless or any material that won't rust out. Would be nice though.deafen wrote:Not quite. I mean the shiny clamps shown in this pic on the muffler end of the pea-shooters.

I checked out the Clampco site, along with the part number mentioned -Kubelmann wrote:I replace these with a Clampco 94106-0138 You can search it with 1 1/4" stainless steel t-bar clamp... Way better.. and not pricey.

- but it doesn't look like it will seal the VW exhaust system like the stock ones do. I'm curious how these work. K-Mann, can you post up some pics with these new clamps installed?
Thanks,

Is this for a pea shooter exhaust or a stock Thing exhausts?

Do the tailpipe outlets on the muffler have a flared end to accept a seal ring/retaining ring/clamp setup like the heaterbox-to-muffler inlets?
The inlet clamp kits contain 35mm I.D. rings (same as the Type I "pea-shooter" tailpipes use), but I suspect you need 32mm for the Thing muffler - and they're rare as hen's teeth anymore.
You can buy a muffler installation kit for a non-fresh 40HP (which had 32mm inlets) which contains two sets of rings and clamp parts, and have a few gaskets left over...those who have them are pretty proud of them these days, expect to pay ~$30. P/N 111 298 007
Older single-damper-pipe bus mufflers also used 32mm seals so you wouldn't think these parts would be so hard to find.
For the record:
32mm seal ring 111 251 221
32mm retaining ring 111 251 223
35mm seal ring 111 251 241
35mm retaining ring 111 251 233B
clamp half 111 251 269A (35mm, not "correct" for 32mm application but about all you're likely to find)
35mm kit 111 298 051 (contains 1 ea 111 251 241 & 233B and two 111 251 269A & bolts/nuts)

Re: '74 exhaust clamps
From what I understand, the Beetle's pea shooter and the '74 Thing exhaust are pretty much the same with the exception of where the tail pipes exit the muffler (from the side, not the back). Is this right?Kubelmann wrote:Is this for a pea shooter exhaust or a stock Thing exhausts?
But to answer your question, no, it's for my Tri-Mil (pictured above). As you can see I'm using standard VW exhaust clamps from the heater box to the muffler, but I'd like to replace them with stainless clamps if possible.

OK, you had me going there. You're talking about the heaterbox-to-muffler inlet joints (35mm). I know of no non-stock clamp that's superior to the 111 298 051 kit for this application. A popular upgrade is to weld flanges to the heaterbox outlets and the muffler inlets so they can be joined using a gasket (same as the gaskets used at the exhaust ports on the heads).

Re: '74 exhaust clamps
I again agree with Marc. The clampco clamps work great to put tail pipes on Thing exhaust. The stock clamp works fine and are low cost to put tail pipes on the pea shooter and the connection from the heat exchangers (unless you go quality and (as Marc mentioned) have your connectors flanged. I do have some oe German heat exchangers that are flanged. I only do flange personally.

Re: '74 exhaust clamps
Thanks for the input guys. My issue is that my stock VW clamps have oxidized and rusted out long before any of my other components will, and I was hoping for some sort of stainless clamp alternative. Welding flanges would be a better option than using clamps, just not one I can make at this time.
Thanks again,
