Thing CV Joints
First, whats usually a sign your CV joints are going out? There is a sound coming from the rear, like two hammers hitting each other, but only does it when I go over large ruts, or bumps in the road. My dad thinks it's the CV joints...
Where can I get new CV joints at?

Ok. So, when a CV is going bad in Thing, would it just "click" all the time?Bruce2 wrote:The angle of the CV joint does not change when you go around a corner in a Thing. There is no axial load on a Thing axle, and the load on the CV is no different in corners. Turning has no effect on the noise a CV makes in a Thing.

Bottom line. If you suspect a CV is bad, check for a torn boot and the resultant dirt that gets into the CV causing upcoming failure.
If you suspect a CV is bad, remove axle assembly, disassemble, clean, inspect, figure it out.
wear gloves. CV is not healthy
I have "done" 100s of VW CVs so I am not an expert on bad ones but rather a seaker of good ones.
On the Baja, with my old pals, I am the CV guy. A bad axle can be swapped end to end/// (which reverses the axial pressure area and give new life to otherwise dead CVs...
For a stock Thing the CVs are well designed and will perform for many miles after they "click"

Right. My point is that it has nothing to do with turning.MNAirHead wrote:Bruce..
When they were failing in my 181.. I heard a click.. not sure if it was the increased anguarity or what..

I've heard mine click, and groan. One time while I was in LA the noise started. I didn't want to deal with the mess, so I took it out, pushed some of the grease better into the balls, then installed it backwards. I think that was about 3 years ago.
