Portable Jacks for a Thing
I have never been a fan of the stock Thing jack. More than once I have seen them do damage to aour beloved Thing. There has a been a discusssion lately about where to get a good jack that could replace the stock unit. I have heard great things about the hydraulic scissor jack - the KYB KJZ008 is very popular with the Japanese road racing crowd. But it is only for sale in Japan and the best price I found was $73 (8,800 yen) but with shipping it came to over $200 But I found a comparable US item at Northern Tool for $50 Torin Big Red Hydraulic Scissor Jack — 1 1/2-Ton, Model# T111 This scissor jack enables loads to be raised easier by using hydraulics instead of the old-fashioned mechanical screw jack. Low height is 51/4in. Max. height is 15 in. It would fit under the back seat on the other side of the battery. Another solution is to get an Aluminum Porsche 944 scissor jack and handle. I have seen them on eBay for as low as $20 Any other ideas about jacks and Things

I've read elsewhere that the Torin jack and the KYB jack are one in the same. A casual look at these photos belies the point.Kubelmann wrote:. . . But I found a comparable US item at Northern Tool for $50 Torin Big Red Hydraulic Scissor Jack — 1 1/2-Ton, Model# T111
I have no experience with Torin products. It makes me a little suspicious that they can only be had from Northern Tool. I think I'll hold out for the KYB. Besides, for the KYB one can get a cool rubber pad that looks like it will perfectly fit a Thing's front beam.

I now have one of those jacks and I have it strapped under the back seat on the side where the battery isn't. It fits great along with jumper cables and other good emergency tools and supplies. It would fit under the front hood where the stock jack was very easily. I can measure the exact dimensions of the case easily.

Call it leverage. This jack takes unfelt effort to lift the car unlike other "bottle jacks" i own that take more effort and are far less stable. The scissor is supposed to be set perpendicular to the side rail of the car giving superior stability. I set the the jack under the front frame support or in the rear on the torsion tube and it lifts like nobody's business. I sold my stock Thing jack for the same price as this jack.

Hi K-mann. I are you talking about the KYB or the Torin? I've yet to find a domestic supplier for the KYB. Where did you get yours?Kubelmann wrote:I now have one of those jacks and I have it strapped under the back seat on the side where the battery isn't. I can direct you to a source of the KYB jack for $125 plus shipping from Japan. But, I bought the Torin from Northern Tool last May for $50. It has proved to be very high quality tool. It has the same lifting range and load tolerance as the KYP for 1/3 the price. I pulled a motor and trans from a prerunner on the Baja using only this jack as our only lifting devise. I can post the link to the KYB but so far the Torin proves to be a fine tool.
