Exhaust system for my project Type IV VNT motor...
I have Jake Raby building my Type IV 2270 motor which should be on its way to me come mid May. Once I get it, I have to custom fab my intake and exhaust system for my Garrett VNT-25 (I believe that is the model). Anyway, I am thinking that I will need to custom fab my system from scratch, but don't know where to acquire some of the key parts I will need such as flanges and stuff. I have even considered just buying a merged 4-1 system to use as a base for building my system. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the best route would be?
If it matters, I will be running a complet EFI and DIS from one of eiterh SDS, Electromotive, or Wolf. I will also be running a water-air intercooler from like what is on my Typhoon (4.3L V6 Turbo... in case someone actually doesn't know what one is).
Anyway, any suggestions are appreciated.

Go to "in the works" at John Maher Racings website, then back to the previous edition. You'll see a nice example of a custom merged Typ Vier turbo header.
For the 4->1 collector you can buy an "exhaust kit" from John Connolly. They are made for a T1 but it gives you lots of bends and a collector.

Do you have a link for that site? I will look, but if you get a chance, please post it.
I had looked at the Bug Pak kit, but I would like to get something that is made for the Type IV if possible.
See ya!

Follow that link, then click in the works. Look at the one pic of the exhaust I mentioned. Then click last months edition, or whatever the link is at the bottom for previous posts. Then you can see more of it.

Exhaust system for my project Type IV VNT motor...
Hi Coach
Im building my system right now, not really im typing here but you know what I mean.
I had all my flanges profile cut buy a specialist shop, then I went out and bought an arm load 1.5 inch mandrel bends. The worst part is making a nice collector. An exhaust shop near me had the makings on one, it was just cone shaped piece of tubing. A word of warning if you use a Mig to weld it togehter make sure no wire gets inside because they can come loose and go through the turbo, yuk.
Im going to use 3 inch pipe from the turbo back and a Hoocker headers Aero chamber muffler. Try and buy Maximum Boost by Corky Bell, he mentions called weld eels, a hydraulic fitting that make good turbo exhausts, they are very usefull at the turbo outlet. I used steam pipe fittings for my turbo outlet.

Thanks Steve! I will make sure I watch about foriegn material in my pipe as I know I don't need that floating around in there. I already have Maximum Boost and have read it a couple times, but I guess it is time to go read it again. Thanks for the info.

Make sure to read all the fabrication articles in the Tech section at www.sdsefi.com
They make it almost look easy.

Header parts; well I to will be building a turbo header system. Parts? yes boy do I have the places. (1) Flanges for both turbo and exhaust can be bought from Rimco,(714) 549-0357 I just did it. Plus Rimco was kind enough to custom make the trubo flange for a Labaron, which is the turbo I'm using, flame cut half inch steel. Pipes of all sizes (headersbyed.com)(612) 729-2802 merge collectors, the Chassis Shop (231) 873-3640 O before I forget the Chassis Shop also sells exhaust donuts (they are 360 degrees pipes that you cut to make your angles. also headersbyed.com can supply most everything. hope this will help

Coach, I take it you're not planning on heat. Does any one have any suggestions for a similar set up with heat? Is there a heaterbox out there that could be used on a typeIV turbo?
By the way, what is your CR going to be? What controls are you using for boost?

I made my own turbo header. What I did was buy a bobcat offroad header, cut and sectioned the collector to the right so the turbo compressor housing was right down the middle of the motor. I then cut back the collector to fit the larger size of the TO4 flange. I cut out the slip joints and added flanges and then welded it all up. Oh, almost forgot, I added a small section of pipe just below the turbo flange and added a wastegate flange. When all was said and done it was about half the price of a CB header.
