Please help, best turbo for 1600-1776,quick spool max boost by 5500-6k
Can some please make a list of the best all around turbos for a low compression 1776 built for a aggressive but still street able bug.. quick spooling and capable of 15-20 psi full boost around 4k and 5500 max rpm.. but will still work ok on my1600dp with upgraded rockers and valve springs while I build the low comp 1776 mentioned above... I have up to $1300 to spend on it if need be.. would really appreciate your input on the top 3 for the money.. sorry Im sure this has been asked over and over on here.. I'm just having a hard time finding a straight forward answer..

Talk to clonebug on here. He'll help you out and you'll be able to roll $1200 over into the 1776 build.

Not new to turbo, been around boosted bugs since i was 6 or 7 years old, 1992 or so. My current car has been on and off the road with a turbo since 09. Thanks for the kind words. For a long time, the car just had a lowered stock beam in it, I also re-indexed the spring plates to bring the rear down. Now it has a 3" narrowed front beam, with dropped spindles. I recently put 29mm torsion bars in the rear, and again, adjusted it for the look i like.bug&kadettfan510 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2017 3:56 pm Thanks man.. so ur new to turbo aswell huh... how's your experience so far?? I've been booked pretty solid the last couple weeks with graduation and now next week a 1300 mile round trip for a family camping/fishing trip.
That is on top of 50-60 hr work weeks........

Lots of good info in here even though it's dated. Has a turbo list if I remember correctly......most of those turbos are going to be hard to find with the high scrap prices a few years ago.
You can also read my build... you might get some idea of what it takes to have a turbo driver.

I only have experience with Subaru turbos and of the 3 different ones I have run I haven't found one I didn't like yet.
Picking a turbo is a personal thing.....it will all depend on what you want......all out high revving powerhouse or nice street mannered midrange powerhouse.
It's pretty tough to have both.
I like turbos on the smaller side which means looking for a compressor and turbine wheel around 1 1/2 inch to 2.0 inch in diameter. Any larger and it will be a lagging dog unless you rev to 7000 rpm.
A RHB5 from the late 80's Subaru GL-10 is a great turbo for a 1600......might be tough to find since it is a pretty old turbo.
A TD04L-13T from a 2002-2008 Forester/WRX is now what I run and is a great turbo for my 1679 but does give full boost at about 3800 rpm.....that is at the high limit and makes you have to drive at a little higher rpm to keep in the insta-boost range.
A Dodge stealth turbo from the Twin turbo car is a tiny little thing which would give excellent insta-boost. I have one on my shelf and might have to try it some day......it is a spare for now.
There might be a few others but as I said.....I stick to Subaru turbos since I know them........ and love them.......$60.00 or less at swap meets or sometimes online.
That is on top of 50-60 hr work weeks........

The numbers are correct for a TD04L-13T......It looks like a real Suby turbo to me.rubenski wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2017 12:36 am Is this the turbo you have clone?

Check the turbo for play at the shaft...also check the blades for damage.bug&kadettfan510 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2017 11:12 pmIm looking into one of those td04.. guy wants 100.. that to much u think? There might be a crack between the WG flap and turbine hole which is pretty common but I have only seen one that way so far.
Price is dependent on condition........It's your wallet.
I have no issue making grown men cry with low ball offers and most people that are selling at swap meets don't even know what the turbo is from.....Therefore I baffle them with BS and low ball them......
The TD04 is just a cartridge and comes in many flavors....from a TD04-9B to a TD04-19T or other numbers.....
A suby turbo is a TD04L-13T. and has a part number of 144xxxxx-360. The 360 is the suby WRX/Forester number you want.
The MHI turbo comes on many cars so be careful what you buy since some of them are clocked funny and can be hard to change to work on a VW.
