I picked up a cheap TD04 tonight. Looking forward to trying it.

Which one???
There are many flavors of the TD04 from the tiny TD04-9B to the TD04H-19G and possibly larger.
Post a pic of the inlet and outlet and tell us the size of them.
Anything bigger than 1.5 inch is going to be too big for a 1600 unless you want boost to come on at 4500 rpm.

It's a 13T
But it is missing the down pipe part. No biggie for me because I run my exhaust straight out the back! Just have to get a flange to weld the pipe on.

You know I might want to just not use the internal waste gate. Can I just take that crap off and buy a flange that comes right off the housing? Then get an external gate?
I looked at some specs. Looks like it flows 390cfm, which should be perfect because I'm going to also put on my 390 cfm Holley in place of the 450. I just hope I can tune it ok. 4 corner idle might be a pain on my little 1600.

If you remove the wastegate actuator you will have to weld the flap shut.

The TD04L-13T turbo is not set up for draw through if that is what you are planning on doing. It more than likely will suck oil from the CHRA.
Some say it will work fine so all you can do is try it I guess.

Flanges are fairly easy to make out of 3/8ths or 1/2 inch plate steel. Just buy the gaskets from your local Subaru Dealer and use them as a pattern.

Ebay might have them available too.

Yeah there are very few turbos that are set up for draw through in a size that will work for me so I just have to run it. The one I have now isn't either. Not ideal. After I get it on and the other Holley on and tuned in going to start gathering parts for FI. That will take me some time because I know nothing about that stuff. I saw a steel flange on ebay for $17. Little more for stainless. I just hate all the bulk of internal wastegate, but they function and cost nothing so....
I am really hoping this one spools more quickly but I hate that exhaust/internal waste gate set up on it. I will have to merge the waste gate into the exhaust which will look dumb. I guess I could get a flange that has 2 separate holes but then I have to run 2 pipes side by side which will also look dumb.

The flap valve will open enough to bypass exhaust gas without having to drill a second hole in the flange.

I just have a 2 1/2 inch exit pipe centered over the turbine shaft and have done it that way with three different turbos.

Ok cool. I'd rather it be like that. Is yours under 2" outlet?

I made the outlet 2.5 inch.

Ok. I read that the 13t originally was a 2.20" outlet so I will likely do 2.5 as well. My T3 is 2" and it looks and sounds a little puny. I'd like a little more bark to it!

2.5 is the outside diameter of tubing so it would actually be closer to 2.25 on the inside which will match the turbine wheel quite well.
I have just a 90 degree bend and then an open SuperTrapp muffler welded to that. There is very little restriction with mine but it still keeps it nice and quiet.
Loud exhaust gets annoying pretty quickly if you do any long distance driving at all. You want to hear the engine so you can listen for detonation.

Yeah most of my driving will be in town. Here in Daytona beach it's all 50mph and under unless you get on the interstate... Which I wont! Too many crazys there!

Speaking of detonation.... Can't you put a knock sensor in with megasquirt?

Sure you can......tuning it is the problem........How many times can you be wrong??????

I guess I assumed with a knock sensor it would automatically take timing out if it detected detonation.
