Turbocharged 1600

With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

I used the stock fuel line for the carb turbo setup and supposedly it is good for up to 170 hp and the stock pump is too.

I now use it as a return on my EFI and I haven't had any trouble with it at all.

Use the Renault Carb and the VW fuel pump.
I have no idea how that Renault fuel system is set up but if it has a regulator then you will probably need to add a second fuel line since you need a feed line and a return line.
You can use the stock line for return and just add a new line for a feed.
I installed a 5/16ths line in the tunnel for a new feed line.

I still feel you are complicating things by using the Renault pump and regulator when you can easily just feed that Renault carb with the stock VW pump if you modify it.

It's your build and you need to do it your way. I like watching how each person solves an issue and that is the fun of the build.

Make sure you keep posting pics so others can learn......

Hello mate unfortunately the Renault carb only needs 3 psi at idle and fuel pressure must stay 3psi above boost pressure and the stock pump will produce to much pressure at idle .
My stock pump is kicking out 10-11 psi.

Right everyone I need need some advice on jetting this carb is there anyone out there who can help?

I just shimmed my pump up with gaskets and some metal shims I made to get it down to the pressure I wanted.

Evening everyone I now have pretty much all the parts for my turbo conversion but need some more advice.
Now I'm still new to this so I'm sorry if this is a silly question, right my Garrett T15 has a 35mm diameter inlet and the flange I brought to fit this turbo also has a 35mm diameter hole in it, the pipe work I brought has a OD of 38mm and a ID of 35mm,now my question is does the flange just slide up to the pipe work then gets welded or should the flange have a larger hole in it so the exhaust pipe can slide into the flange and then be welded?
Hope this makes sense

It doesn't really matter. Build it however is easier for you. Being able to slide the flange onto the pipe makes it easier for mock up of parts.

I've done it both ways...... It's not that critical for a street engine.

Looks like I'm pretty late to the party but here is a link to my stock 1600 longblock with a small T3 boosting it. Oversized for the stock cam for sure.

Hi mate thanks for the video and your not to late to the party :-)
I've got most of the parts now and will be starting the turbo build after the summer ( I've got a few shows to go to and I don't want the bug off the road for them)
I will tell you my set up first and then I have some questions for you if you don't mind?
Stock 1600
Renault 5GT carb (solex 32 dis)
Garrett t15 turbo
62 psi fuel pump
High flow filter
Basic small bore 4 into 1 header
Stock distributor limited to 24 degrees BTDC

Now for the questions
What size fuel lines you running?
At what rpm does the T3 come on boost?
What's you upper rpm limit?
Why a T3 turbo?

One of the main reasons I've stalled the conversion is that I'm now thinking that the t15 turbo may be to small and that I should move up to a t2, what do you think?
I will not be using the bug as a race car I just wanted a little more go as it will be used as a summer daily.
I was also planning on running the turbo up high and placing it to the right hand side of the engine where one of my dellorto carbs sit on and running the turbo oil return back into the fuel pump block off or the right hand side rocker cover, what's your thoughts on that?

I use a 5/16" feed line and the stock as a return.
The T3 didn't start boosting until a little over 3000 with the stock cam. It wasn't perfect.
I could get to about 4800, but the power was dropping
T3 because I thought it would work, but needs a larger cam that will allow for more exhaust. And I wanted a new turbo that wasn't used off of a car.

If I were to do it again with the stock cam, I would use a t25.

I have a engle 100 in mine I hope that cams going to work?
Still haven't decided yet between the Garrett T15 or T2

I think you will be fine with that GT15 turbo.
It might not put out max hp but for a street engine you will love it. Having boost come in strong at 3000 rpm is a blast.
The second RHB5 I ran was full boost at 3300 rpm and it was a great street driver.
The only time it was annoying was on long drives over the pass at altitude and a 6% grade where it wanted to kick on my W/I and drown the engine with too much water.
It was good to 17 lbs but would not hold it all the way through the rev range.

Every turbo is a trade off.
You can't have it all.
On that note a small turbo beats no turbo any day so if you have it run it and see what kind of results you get.
You can always look for a different turbo and upgrade the up pipe later.

Build the up pipe with a band clamp in it so you only have to upgrade a short section of your exhaust.

In a stock motor with a stock crank, you don't want to rev beyond 5k anyhow. So insta-boost at 3k and then nice up to 5 is great. Grab it with both hands. ;)

Right been playing around and here's the results
With the waste gate locked shut
1st gear = zero boost
2nd gear = 1 psi @ 4000 rpm & 2psi @ 5200
3rd gear = 3 psi @ 3000rpm & 6 psi @5200
4th gear = 3psi @ 3000 rpm & 8 /9 psi & 5200

Now the results with the waste gate actuator all connected up
1st= zero boost
2nd = zero boost
3rd = 2psi max @ 5200 rpm
4th = 3 psi max & 5200 rpm

Are you still using the GT15 turbo?
If so, you should be making way more boost than that.
I suspect you have a leak somewhere....
