Hi Udo,

Sad to hear that your starter wasnt strong enough. On my beetle (also 2 l type 4) I used one of a golf. I cant remember the year but it has the following numbers:

Bosch nr 001121006
Vw nr 020911023f

Those are good available on the Dutch scrapjards for approx 25-30 euro's. The only mod you need to do is to (weld and) redrill the holes.

Good luck!

Best regards Mark

Ps. This is what it looks like after the mod.

You just need a file. no need to fill the hole, the starters center in the transmission hole, not the bolts. Works fine.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

that will be not needed for this engine at the moment.. those tweaks can always added later.

If it runs and drive... I will continue in saving money for EFI :)

You can actually MIG aluminum with straight argon or helium (or various %blends of the two, the more helium, the thicker you can go for a given welder, hotter arc.)

This works best with a spoolgun, and usually provides serviceable welds for bulk fill anyway.
If you don't have a spoolgun, your MIG must be able to use the small ~100mm spools and ideally have a new teflon liner, and keep the cable as straight as possible.

Ideally your welder will have adjustable burnback, set to minimum, as the al wants to become one with the tip every time you shut off. Otherwise just try to make sure you have ~3/8" wire projection every time you let off.

@Udo, great! :D

For welding I used tig, with straight argon. Need good cleaning/grinding before welding.
