Amr500 on 1641cc ! dyno p23

Post by rubenski »

Hi guys,

Ruben from belgium here.

Got a blue 64 bug with a 2000km old freshly rebuild engine. Specs are:

1641cc
Dual dellorto's drla 36mm
Pertronix distributor
Scat serpentine
Engle W100 cam
Stock flywheel and cranck but well balancded
Csp super competition exhust
Little bit higher compression
Not the origial rocker axle, the bolted one from scat without the clips
Mildly ported heads
And full flow with external oil filter.

Car has 94.9bhp and 145nm at the wheels.

I would like to fit an amr500 cause of the easy bolt on power you can get from it.

I like to make the manifold myself and then get the car tuned by my mechanic who build the engine.

http://Www.proformance-belgium.com

What do you suggest for carb? Is the dhla a good option for this application?

Ive been reading alot on this and the samba forum about the amr.
Found some on ebay for round 200 $ excl shipping. What kind of product number on the amr do i need to look for?

Any more hints and tips?

I want to keep.cost as low as possible.

Dont want to go injection due to high cost.

If u want i van show some pics of the car and engine and dyno sheet.

Sorry for my bad english and greetings from belgium

Ruben

I like what you are trying to do.
My first consideration is packaging, where to plan on fitting everything? That would make the carburetor decision for you.
I am also surprised you can source an ARM500 outside of Japan, what is the trick?

Not many people here have pulled that off, this person did viewtopic.php?f=3&t=142107 note that this is in a bus.

No information, but nice picture

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Yup, thats the way i wanna go.

Allready contacted 2 ebay sellers and the didnt spoke of any shipping problems.

From all the topics ive read an amr500 seems to fit under the hood of a bug pretty fine. But i dont mind using standoffs.

Allready ordered some stock 1600inlet manifolds.

And when i then buy the amr ill see how it fits.

But dont reaty know a lot bout carbs.....

Hi Ruben

I have been running an AMR 500 on a stock 1600 DP for 2 Seasons now. I am currently running fuel injected With megasquirt and E85. I run a 3:1 drive ratio and I am seeing around 1 bar boost.

Here is a tread With my car in the Norwegian forum.
http://www.vwnorge.no/index.php/topic,51274.120.html

I got my supercharger from John Verban in Australia. I live in Norway and shipping took around 2 weeks. You can do the payment over paypal.
http://www.kemotorsport.com/

John can also set you up With flanges as well as a pulley for the charger. If I am not wrong he has 2 sizes for flat belts.

you can use this calcultor to get an idea where you will end up With boost With a given ratio:
http://performancetrends.com/Calculator ... ulator.php

I have stock around 60HP and With 1 bar i estimate to be around 110HP (based on weight of car and 1/4 mile times). what kind of Power are you aiming at?

PS: the tip you got at the samba is for the same Place, kemotorsport. Stay away from the crank pulleys, they have a design flaw and tend to crack.....

Thx, thats a nice writeup.

Got an amr500 on the way. Hope it will get here fast.

Since i run the car at least once a week i can not take it out for a whole period of time.

Ill ask my friends spare (verry verry verry dirty) engine for mock up.

Got an idea in my head and hope it works out.

Just a bit unsure how to calculate the pulley for the blower. Size that is. Want to keep boost safe to not ruin the motor.

Somewhere between 7-10 psi, thats about 0.7 bar.
Not looking for high hp's just a lot of torque down low. Got a short 1200 transmission so i dont care for high speeds.
I get my kicks at the traffic lights and leave first.

What would you think would be fine for diameter on the amr? I would loke to use the flat belt that runs in the scat serpentine kit. Is the pulley mounted originaly on the amr any good?

I appriciate your help and hope i can learn a lot on the way.

Greetzngs

I've got an AMR500, flanges, pulleys, etc in the shed. Decided you go turbo so it's up for sale soon. PM me if you're interested.

Hi Ruben

I have used this calculator to get an idea of were to start with the drive ratio for the supercharger.

http://performancetrends.com/Calculator ... ulator.php

My actual max boost is 15 psi and the calculator says a little over 18 psi. (3:1 drive ratio, 1600 engine, 70% efficiency both engine and supercharger. The calculator is very approximate and the efficiency of the Amr500 is lower than 70%....but it can give an indication on where to start.
According to the calculator a drive ratio of 2.3 will give you around 8 psi.
The max speed of the amr500 is 16500 rpm. I have a 5500 rpm redline so I am driving the supercharger at its limit. At 2,3 you are well within max speed for the amr.
The scat pulley has a 6 ¾ diameter (17,15 cm). A pulley on the amr with a diameter of 2,9in or 7,45cm should give the right ratio. I have thrown away the stock pulley so I cannot check the diameter.
Why not try the stock pulley on the supercharger and see where you end up?

Hey Alexios,

thanks for the info, 8psi sounds really good to start with.
thanks for the info on the pulley, I will definitely try the pulley that's on the amr500. I Hope it arrives today or anywhere this week.
then I can take some measurements.

when it arrives I'll take some photo's :-)

then I need to get a mockup engine so I can see how I'm gonna fit it, that's going to bring up some questions to probably.

still trying to figure out what carb I will use best.
maybe I 'll ask my engine builder what het thinks is the easiest carb to tune as he will be going to do it! :-p

Nice, was it th kit that sold on flat4free ?

Why did u use 75 or 55 mm? Different boost when needed?

Got some info on the carb? Needles and stuff?

No @ Keversite.nl, was sold very quickly..

yes to try different boost pressure
It was installed on a H engine so the oil became too hot..
Was running very fast under high boost.. (fuel euro 95)

Can't remember all the correct carb settings, sorry. I used a Innovate AFR to adjust the mixture. The fuel jet was bigger than the air jet..

ok, thanks, good to know someone with the same language that had some experiences.

hope that my oil wont get hot, since its full flow and a pretty freshly build engine.

do you have some more pictures or maybe a build thread?

you may send them to martens "underscore" [email protected]

got any dyno data?

thanks en bedankt ;-)

Got the Supercharger delivered today, looks really good, verry nice condition, no obvious wear and no endplay on the pulley side.

Took some pics and will post them tommorow.

Looking forward to getting it mounted. But in no hurry what so ever cause im on a budget. ..
