Re: first bottom end /turbo build
Been driving as much as I can. This distributor has more mechanical advance than I would like. In order for it to be where it needs under boost I have to only run 5* initial and it doesn't like to idle. I can't limit the weights either, they don't have stop tabs...
I installed a helper spring for the wastegate. Opens up at 7psi now so it's safe-ish to get into it, which I do, every time I drive. I think it needs a slightly longer shot on the accelerator pump because it cruises at 11.7 to 12 on the AFR, then when I put my foot down hard it goes to 11 then up to 14 until the boost gets a pound or two then it levels off at 12.6 or so. And it leans out a bit at the top of fourth to 13.8 ish if I leave my foot hard down. Not sure why. Maybe just not enough fuel flow.
It cruises rich, I know, but seeing as fuel economy isn't top of my list and the boost readings are good I'm Ok to leave it that way. Unless someone knows how to lean it out a bit down low... I'm running a 145 main and a 75z emulsion tube with two holes closed.

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
i finally got to put this car on the scales and see what it really weighs.
with 1/4 tank and me (190 lbs) the scale read 1980lbs.
as near as i can find out, the super beetle was 2100 and some change when it was new and empty. which means that the hub caps, rear seat, carpeting, hood hinges, half the decklid, heater boxes and ducting, misc. electrical stuff (warning lights, dome light, door open switches, wiring etc.) and all the other parts i deemed "unnecessary" saved me nearly 300 lbs! provided that the scale i used was correct... i really dont know. it was at a scrap metal yard and i drove away once the dial stopped moving. but even if its off by 100 pounds i still think thats pretty good considering i still have all the original glass and bumpers and full steel fenders and hood.
now the question is whether to go "lean street machine" with some ride quality intact, add some dynomat and a decent paint job, or full on race car, keep shedding weight and adding power, add race seats, cage, harnesses and murder the suspension...... either way i really cant ruin the value of this thing more than i already have.

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
Distributor issues. Again. It runs fine most of the time but sometimes under load, any load not just on boost, it starts missing. Cap, rotor, points and condenser are all new, though I know that doesn't always mean good.
I'm seriously debating just putting a limited 009 back in because it's so cheap, but I like the off boost response of this vacuum 049 I have on right now.
I am really close to dropping some money on tires and front end parts, and while they are needed, I am also debating a crank fire setup with mega squirt.
What is the cheapest reliable way to do this? What are good sources for parts? And which parts are needed new and which ones can be scavenged? Keeping in mind that tidy packaging is not first on my list but speedy assembly is to an extent, as my wife's car needs some hefty work and the vw is our only backup...

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
Since this distributor advances too much and I can't limit the weights I bought a new 009 from my local foreign parts shop. Then went to the hardware shop and got some 4mm grub screws to thread into the stop tabs so I can have a semblance of control over the thing. Hopefully I can throw it in tonight and not have idling troubles in traffic... Though I haven't been driving a ton on account of it being 110* here for the last ten days straight.
And I've decided to lean the car up a bit, put in some dynomat and carpeting and just FIX the suspension instead of going all out race mode with it. I have an American v6 in mind for a track car that I think I can buy, build, slam, and haul to Vegas (closest actual race track) cheaper than I could do the suspension and EFI that this car would need to be a track day racer.

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
Should have switched the dizzy a long time ago. Got rid of any hint of a misfire. Car will idle now. And has great throttle response. Strobe light shows 12* idle and 24* at speed. Hit 8psi in third and held without any pinging or missing. Had to hit the brakes though cause i remembered the speed limit on that road was 35...
Gonna take off my waste gate helper spring and try pushing 10 psi...
Also had time this morning to fix my parents lawnmower. I like it when repairs go smoothly.

Good to hear,. What boost would you like to end up with?

As much as I can by tweaking the parts I already have. Clone got up to 13 through a solex... But with crank fire ignition.
I'll see how it goes at 10. I'm honestly pretty happy with 7/8 psi I have right now..

According to the stopwatch on my cousins phone my trash went 0-60 in 9 seconds. And that with an extra 220lbs in the passenger seat.
Then I saw a rather patriotic display of red, white, and blue lights in my rear view..
Off with a warning
Happy Independence Day!

Boredom and a spray can led to these go fast stripes. Definitely added .0024376 horsepower.
Now I'm thinking of selling it... Still not 100% but I've run out of "cheap" performance mods so the experiMENTAL build (the part that really interests me) is pretty much over...

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
Once you go past 6-8 lbs boost you have to pay to play.
You get higher intake temps and need good ignition retard to keep away from detonation.
Water Injection and/or an efficient intercooler are required.
Look at all the 80's cars that had turbos....they were limited to around 7-8 lbs for a good reason.
Today with FI and ECU's like Megasquirt and others you can move up into the high power area's.....but you have to be careful.
Consider it sort of like an education when you buy the better equipment.
It's been 4 years for me and I am still learning.
The engine really wakes up at the higher boost settings but you are on the ragged edge most of the time so bad gas or hot weather can put you into the danger zone.
It takes a lot of time......... and of course there is always money involved.....to get big power.
I think I'm still cheaper in the long run than a big stroker engine with my setup.
Plus, I was able to do almost everything myself.

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
thats what im finding out. though for the money ive put into this thing i am having tons of fun. ive more than doubled my power i think. my only real issue is im bored with it.
school is about to start again and ive run out of fun money. the car is good for short trips around town and a blast on the drag strip. but with the races only happening 2-3 times a year its very difficult for me to be happy with straight line speed. especially since there are so many cops in this town that have no real crime to stop...
im 2 hours from vegas but i wouldnt dare try to drive this car there to race it for fear that id hurt something and break the bank hauling it home on a trailer that i dont have.
and living space is limited so i cant justify having a car that i cant drive regularly on the roads. so if im going to have a project car, it needs to be cheap, semi-reliable, fast, something that wouldnt take more that a month or two to have road ready, and something i can have fun in locally. i know that seems like a lot to ask out of a project but i think it can be done.
if i do decide to abandon this car for something i am REALLY going to miss the feeling of a spooling turbo and the noises that they make. and i also LOVE proving all my local nay-sayers wrong every time i put this thing on boost and dont blow it up.

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
Car is listed in the type 1 classified page as well as some of my local classifieds. Everything works fine. It's been a fun build, and I really LIKE this car but I just can't seem to fall in love with it.
Thanks to all who put in advice. I'd probably have given up without all the help and tips.

Re: first bottom end /turbo build
out on a test run yesterday with a potential buyer, my chinese turbo decided it didnt want to work anymore. loud CLANG then i could hear the impeller hitting the housing. all the way home. engine ran fine off boost but needless to say the car is still mine.
the moral of the story, dont buy chinese turbos.
