So, after many fights with clutches, starter motors and the brake system, I finally have things working 'normally', so some street test runs could be made and for the first time in 5 years it was outside again getting some fresh gas



Hopefully inspection and an alignment (and a little drop to the coil-overs) to be road legal again in coming weeks
Then off to the dyno for a N/A base map figure.

Which motor this time?

Its the long term all-new T4 motor with Okrasa 74mm crank (same you run), 98mm bore with thick wall alu cylinders, billet (Thorsten Pieper) heads with 48x41 Ti valves, Pauter cam (between a 86B and a 86C for comparison) with straight cuts, mild compression for N/A, but high for a turbo engine (1:9-ish), 48mm TB's and a 1 3/4" exhaust from VWspeedshop.
I think the large holes in the intake may be not so good for airspeed and the resulting torque, so I am indeed really curieus what the end result of this version 2,2 ltr engine is!
The former 2,2 ltr engine with the really nicely ported Original casting 914 2.0 heads (and lower CR) made 172 hp when I reverted it to N/A form.

No, at the crank. That figure in whp for a very low compression and very mild cammed engine with a 'stuck-together' exhaust, would otherwise have been extremely spectaculair

I agree! Hopefully this engine will be even more interesting when boosted. I have tried most everything to make it even better, so I have great anticipation as you might understand

The shop appointment was partly succesfull (got another 2 year valid inspection, yeah!), but the car ran with weird lambda values all over the plce and was holding back audibly, especially when she warmed up some more...?
So, you could hear her struggling, still made 170hp at 6000 RPM when the dyno operator stopped the run exactly there. Torque was just at its peek at this RPM, which is unusually high up the rev range of course.

Now investigating what went wrong. I suspect something a new engine set-up would do like electrical interference or something
I'll keep you guys updated





I am also considering individual coils for space reasons and less risk of interference... That coil there in the middel needs to go anyways when I convert to turbo as its very in the way of things.

These require special ignition leads also I think? (which ones, where to find those)

I have 4 of them in boxes and will use them someday. I have only heard good things about them. I don't have wires for them yet.

Those coils rock, variants of the Mercury offshore motor coils. someone here is running those, one of the boys from Idaho if gray matter is still working, Steve Ardnt I think.
