Turbo kit in a box !

Post by seabeebuggy »

I would like to see all of you join in on this.
The goal is for new people to be able to come and pick out a design and run with it.
Build the kit in mind as a shopping list, Used or new parts. Where to get the used parts if needed IE Subi or Sabb or ???.

After you build the kit you can add a list of addon's like heads and cam.

Remember more people than not don't have a ton of cash.

1915T recipe:

T3 turbo from just about any junkyard car (Saab 2.0, Volvo 2.3 (B23FT), Ford 2.3 (T-Bird/XR4TI), ect)
CB turbo header:
Under the apron: http://cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=292
In the package tray (requires cutting/welding): http://cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=308
CB injection hardware: http://cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=320
German intake plenum from FI Beetle
Injectors (pick what works, I used 375cc/min from a TurboFord)
TB: I picked one from a junkyard VW Golf 8-valve
Ignition system from an Escort (EDIS-4): grab the EDIS module+pigtail, crank sensor+pigtail, coil pack+pigtail, and the ignition wires
Megasquirt ECU: I like MS1, pick what suits you. MS1 is the cheapest one, prices and capability go upwards from there.
A decent wideband for tuning, I have used kits and production boxes from a few different places. So far I like Techedge (in the AU) best, but because of the exchange rate it's more economical to buy something from here like PLX.
Fuel pump from a Ford F-150 (go to FLAPS, it's like $60)
Regulator from CB: http://cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=316
Associated fittings/hoses/filters, ect.

Med Budget/Sleeper/Daily Driver/Weekend Racer
Cost for complete turbo system = $3000.00

2275 - was formerly aspirated
Stock block
Demello crank
Steve Timms Stage2 heads
40mm sidedraft
M-Spec header
Custom T3/T4 turbo with carbon seal
Turbosmart 38mm wastegate
Turbosmart E-Boost Street 2 stage electronic boost controller
Holley boost referenced regulator
MSD ignition with boost retard
Snow water injection (only used on the street for pump gas - car goes slower using it with race gas)

This one is a Karman Ghia weighing in at 2200# with driver
Runs 11.30's @122 MPH consistently and has won many bracket races
Runs 15 psi in 1st and second gear and 22 psi in 3rd and 4th gear -car is traction limited

Car runs 7 psi boost on pump gas on the street w/o water injection and runs 9 psi with it

My kit 2006cc Blow through With cheap turbo.

I have:

Duel 44 IDF Italian carbs. 400.$ I already had them so the cost is not really in my set up.
4 Turbo e tubes 20$
4 33mm Mod rings 35$
Jetting about 100$ worth of jets. See note on the bottom on jetting.
CB Header for a baja, 300$
CB Ducting 50$
CB hats and seals. 80$
China made turbo 48 hot and 50 cold 230$
CB Waist gate 200$
Cheap e bay Blow off valve 30$ Filter for BO 15$
Fuel pump carter 5150 - 150$ Junk yard buy would be better for cost savings.
Mallory Hyfire VI 350$
Mallory unilite Dizzy 250$?
3 bar map off a GM on e bay 35$
Mallory plug wires to work with set up 50$
Mallory Coil I don't remember the MDL 70$
Oil slump for oil retun (not needed) but good to have 75$?
CB Boost reference regulator 80$
Silicone hose and clamps 30$
fuel hose, Vac hose and fittings 50$

Add on's

Alki injection (home made out of part off e bay) 200$
intercooler off a 280Z 30$ on e bay
Fan for intercooler 30$ and miss parts to make it work like switches and mounts 30$

Jetting. You will most likely need lots of jets to find the right tune.
First buy or rent a wide band tuner. AC.net rents them.. it will save you money in jets and frustration.
John at AC.net will sell you jets and if they are not the ones that work for you he will trade them out for free and shipping.
Also it my be a good idea to buy smaller jets and a drill kit you can drill out one set until you see it get too rich. then you drill out another set to the size that worked best. If you want to buy a bunch of jets to have all you need on hand then go to e bay. There is a guy from Itily and he has the best pricing anywhere.

Okay here goes....
My first turbo motor, the motor was n/a to start, lowered compression for turbo
1679 (88x69) thick walls
Scat cast c/w crank (yeah right)
reground Scat c35 cam
Autocraft 1.25 rockers
lightened flywheel
CB 044 heads (stock) 40x35.5
Treuhaft (Mallory) distributor, locked out
Scat buggy header, modified for turo flange
Garrett T03 turbo (Dodge Daytona, used junk year find)
Turbonectics wastegate
Zenith ndiz carb (later a 1 3/4" SU carb)
Holley blue fuel pump with modified boost referenced regulator
This combo was good for 12.30 @ 102 with 10 psi boost
