Agreed.
Very sorry to hear that after all this effort it went pop.

Fingers crossed you are going to keep up the inventiveness Wally and keep the memory of the 959 alive on your next (type 4?) project!!!

I wouldn't be surprised to see the compound turbo set up on the type 4....that would be quite nasty!

For my intended use, hp and spool-up, my current twin-scroll single unit will be quite capable on a medium sized engine.

Especially for user Clonebug a revival of the old Challenge thread (and project)!

I have resurrected the old 1200 Mex engine case and crank which both have n0.1 main bearing damage. I had the crank surface polished and the dowel repaired. Not optimal, but its a Challenge engine and in that spirit: we use what we have. Ususally

Not a bad respons from the TD04L-13T (Impreza 2.0 WRX engine) turbo, but if I can spool it up a little sooner, that would be even better, especially as a 1200cc engine really has very little torque at anything other then in boost (and a non-stock cam)..

Soooo... since another good stock Impreza turbo was hard to locate at a decent price, I did find a cheap TD04L-12T on evilbay
Close enough and it has a little smaller compressor. How much smaller, I dunno, as the effect it wll have on spool or power. It does have the same turbine side, so if the compresoor is indeed a little smaller, spool should be a little bettter.

I will also reuse the slightly damaged 77,5mm 1200 original (but bored) cylinders. The damage from oil supply shortage will be "ball-honed" away for the most part. Since I want to deploy my new Mazda 323 pistons (with higher alu content), a little more clearence won't hurt. I also still have the old rods with the ARP bolts and a stock set of 1300 heads with only two small cracks, so also deemed usuable

Updates as they come available ;-)

Hehe! Spool would be a b*tch with that big a single turbo!

How cool that sounds however, be aware how fragile original 1200 parts really are... Most Challenge participants know by now (to their shame or laughter) but also lots of used parts were used also.
OTOH, the 1200 platform (64mm crank and rods) seems stronger then most of us thought it would be, in some applications (some - my medusa for instance- have run way over 7K with the stock parts! :D

What's the inlet diameter on the compressor side Wally???

My -13T is about 1.75 inches so if that -12T is at 1.5 inches it will probably give you good boost by around 3000-3300 rpm if not earlier.

The best I did with my -13T was 23.2 lbs at 3600 rpm.....I haven't been able to repeat it again but that was some good boosting......

I have a SP1300 in my garage and a tiny subaru turbo. I think you're daring me to do something truly stupid with it...

Wow! Those are some impressive numbers! I've had V8's that wouldn't do that well!

What Wally is not telling you due to his friendly and modest nature is...he actually made 174 hp with that 1200 at iirc 1.7 bar including ignition problems! Wally, 2012 in Tornesch Germany remember? 😁
Still holds the record today and drove it back home to the Netherlands...it's OK Wally, I'll brag for you, bud😂😂
If he didn't have ignition problems, I'm sure he would have cracked the 200 mark

Cheers for that Mark. It really was great fun!

Slowly now and then a small finished part gets added to the 1200 Challenge shelf ;-)
Lots of planning is needed for these kind of excercises 😊

What are the oil galleries like in a 1200 block? How do you stop it spinning bearings?

Late 1200s with the D code are dual relief ect and unless they've been turbo'd lol have had an easier life then a 1600 case ;) i built my 2110 from one and spin that to 6.5k at times
