Right, that makes sense. I thought we were talking a 40hp case. :D

On a related note, the 36hp challenge has always boggled my mind. Crazy stuff.

Hey, I started my pet project again

This one I put in a used (!) W110 cam in on CB straight cuts with 2 degrees advance
and dry-sump again, of course, as the car runs that system, so had little choice on that one.

Because of the DS pump, 'had' to use VWspeedshop's system of multirib (PK5) pulleys. Damn, those are nice!

For now (and time constraints), it will run N/A. Curieus what it makes on 5th september if I meet the deadline..

Nice! What heads and compression are you planning?

This year I had a set new AA ‘043’ heads welded up, so the 77mm bore cylinders would seat properly..
CR will turn out about 1:8 or 8,5 i think. Not measured yet as heads are still at machine shop.

No rule, but yes, I will use the (fragile) stock crank and rods. Have done some treatments to them in the past though for strength ;-)

These 1200 engines build up like this usually seem to stop at about 70-85hp. One of the competitors had 85 with the same intake manifolds/TB's I will use and a bigger cam, so I guess around 80hp (crank) with the W110, but its so far into the unknow still, thats its anyone's guess what it will really be at the dyno that day.

So your 160hp goal should be no problem when it comes time for the turbo?

Very nice to see that you picked up this project again! I was wondering if you had the x2 engine pressurized already ;)

Enjoy!

Indeed! Thats the idea at least: make a really good N/A engine as these small turbo's do not work at 30 psi. Most of these smaller frame turbo's will yield best performance at max 1,5 - 1,7 bar in my experience. Most compressor maps say the same.
If I can make my goal N/A at only 1,5 bar (22-24 psi), 200 should be doable.
Turbo choice is critical too however. My old TD04L-13T was ~perfect I still think, but I sold it long time ago and good ones are not so easy to come by anymore these days for small $$.. I do have a very pristine GT1752 (Saab 93) in the pipeline, which should be similar, although compressor wheel is a little smaller then the 13T (56mm exducer) was. The '52' in 1752 is the compressor exducer (largest diameter) size with Garretts as we all know ;-)

Hi,
Sounds like fun! i have a 1200 to build among other projects with this challenge in mind but there's many things to spend my money on first

i see you have it balanced, i reckons thats got to be one of the biggest helps to make it live, everything working together not fighting each other!

Best of luck to you 8)

I'll bet you've already seen these but just in case. From Australian VW racer/tuner, George Reynolds.

Yes, seen those, but does not apply for our Challenge as we can use the stock dual port 1300 heads (euro spec).

Seems still not optimal as intake from next cylinder is too close so interferes the flow. Basically still single port, only bigger. A lot :P

I even went to the effort of buying new DP 1600 heads and have those weld up to remachine for 77mm bore seating..
