Roll cage
The other day I saw a baja with a rather stout roof rack. It was mounted down to the rear engine cage in the rear. I did not see how it was mounted in the front. This got me thinking about the roll cage in my upcomeing baja project. Has anyone out there built there rollcage outside the car? I might like to try it so that I can keep as much space in the car as possible. I could then use the cage to mount a roof rack and lights to. What do you guys think?

I saw a Baja at one of the Pomona swap meets early this year that had it's roofrack welded to the rollcage with holes drilled in the roof for the attatching tubes. It was really well done and the holes needed were just barely big enough to allow the tubes to pass thru and the owner still had a good seal to keep out water and dust.
Talk about a solidly mounted roofrack......

So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

Roll Cage for Baja Bug
I race in both SCORE and CODE off-road events and came in 12th in class in the last Baja-1000 in class 5-1600 (a baja bug). I've been in some vicious multiple sideways and endovers in the past couple of years and I highly recommend placing the roll cage inside the car, padded of course. The average driver doesn't roll over frequently but when one does use the exterior of the car as a crush zone before impacting the roll cage. Also there are numerous things in the desert that would snag on an exterior roll cage like palo verde trees, cactus and large boulders. Make sure your roll cage is triangulated and the joints are gusseted. You can buy a Class-11 roll cage from ads in VW and dune buggy magazines cheaper than you can try to fabricate one.
