Tools what to bring and what to have around the house.

Trying to come up with a general list of what tools one should have for a baja bug. In order of most important.

Fabrication tools
Grinder
drill
Welder
Tube bender
Chop saw
(That seems like the bare minimum. For major fab some minor fab all you need is welder and grinder)

In car
Oil
fire extinguisher
Screwdriver
Needle nose plyers
Zip ties
elctrical tape
duct tape
Tire plugs
Tow strap
Socket/ wrenches
Bottle jack(at least)
Carb cleaner
Hammer
Axle nut wrench
A few wire ends male and female with crimpers
A bit of extra wire
Fuel line.
Dist cap and rotor
Spark plugs.

Anybody else have suggestions.

A tow strap!

A bottle jack I am not sure about. It might be too short for off-road problems.

There are some parts I would also carry like:

A spare high tension lead (from the coil to the dist).

A spare cap and rotor.

Spark plugs.

Oil.

A survival kit in a can which includes a poncho, something to eat and water. Add to that a phone just in case.

A flash light or two.

A "joy roll".

Some things w/o getting too silly.

I carry a fire extinguisher inside and outside the vehicle
I also carry a few sticks of arc welding rod for the time I may need two batteries and jumper cables to do a temp. weld.

How about some tools that stay in the garage/ shop that would be necessary for a bug.

If you are bending and welding tubes, you might need a tubing notcher. I also have two types of reciprocating saws (Sawzall) - one large, one small - that have come in handy. I also find my drill press to be very valuable. Hand drills are great, but for percision, you can't beat the drill press. I also love my "rattle gun" - lightweight impact driver.

To the survival kit I would add some sort of fire starting device (I'll let you choose).

But it seems like no matter how well equipped you are, when you really need that "right" tool, you won't have it.

I notch tubes with the cutting wheel or chop saw.

To add to what Chuckput said, I would add a drill bit centering tool. You mark your spot, then put it on the press platen (over the hole in the platen or a sacrifical scrap, drop the locating tool down to center it at your marked location, clamp everything in place, replace the locating tool with a bit then have at it.

Two of the tools I use most are my blast cabinet and a grinder on a stand with a wire wheel at the other end of the motor (safety glasses!!!!). A good 60 gallon (minimum) compressor is also a must in my opinion.

Your in car list should include tape - both electrical and "duck" tape.
