Rear hubs

The guys in our area have been experiencing broken rear hubs lately. Is there an aftermarket replacement that is superior to the old type 1 hubs?

Guess I need to clarify better. We are using the type 3 hubs with top hat style rotors. The cast hubs are not holding up to the pounding they receive over the whoops and jumping some of the dunes are probably not good for them either.

The problem is the same as the reason why limited class off road racers such as 5-1600 Baja Bugs and 1600 buggies are now allowed to use race type aftermarket disc brakes. For decades they were required to use stock drum brakes. But there was so much trouble getting quality brake drums, in your case, hubs...that the rules were changed to allow the race brakes. The ones available on the market the last 20 years or so have been made in Brazil or later China. The source is not the problem, it's that the folks ordering them to sell to us are not getting the good quality of the original German ones. The racers are paying about $1200 per axle and up for their brakes to fix the problem. They are also now allowed to use microstub rear hubs. The hubs themselves are not real expensive. All the other changes to use them including the brakes is the high cost.

You can get CrMo rear hubs from CB, and several nice brake kits that work with them.
May have them in other bolt patterns, ISPWest might as well.
They aren't listed separately online but they can be had in eaches.
Billet aluminum fronts hubs as well, including for KP/combo spindles as well as BJ.

It look like CB uses the Mk4 rear caliper which has a very stout parking brake action, usually 38mm floating piston.

The 6061T6 front hubs look like they could take a wilwood rotor adapter etc.
(Haven't gotten a set. Yet, no good pictures, but good description from a lister who has seen them at a show)

Wide5s make it more expensive, but its far less than $1200/axle.
If the existing "adapters" are working for you its ~$300 for just the splined CrMo T3 style hubs.

well another guy from our club broke his hub and rotor this time. He's going to order the chromoly hubs, but we are looking for the rotor also. Haven't had much luck, any suggestions? Aren't these the rotors off the front of the type 3 ?

Rear hubs/brakes:
If you are using the std CrMo hubs there are 2 workable setups (off the top of my head)

1: 914 rear rotors, these are deeep offset and mount over the studs, can be had in 4x130 and other bolt patterns.
2: The CB setup, may just use 914 rear rotors, have not seen a set.
CB has several setups, including the top one, not sure what rotor .

If we are talking front brakes/hubs the suggested CB setup uses aluminum billet hubs and custom rotors that bolt to the back. The have BJ and KP versions, KP can of course fit on the HD combo spindles with the right bearings.

thanks Piledriver, I think that may be what we are looking for. Thinking they are a conversion set from CB.
