Rather then plug up Tims Green Bug Thread with USFS approved exhaust questions, I figured I would open it up in a separate thread.

And Leatherneck if your read pg XI or the "Forward" (I think it was) it says yes that Turbos are good as long as 100% or the exhaust gas passes through the turbine. So my take on that is no blow-off valves or wastgates would be acceptable. Interesting topic though as I always wondered the same.

Wastegate and Blow off valve are before the turbo so sounds like it is a go. I have heard that they are but I have seen some turbos belching flame too. Thanks for the info Daron. That Honda would be a true beast with a Turbo on it.

Yep....Waste gate or blowoff valve is placed in the exhaust before the turbo impeller.

And while sparks MAY be controlled by a turbo, flames are MOST CERTAINLY NOT as any road race watcher since the late 1970s could testify.

But then again, often far more fire danger is a result of the use of catalytic converters in the exhaust systems of most cars and pickup trucks since the mid 70s. Temperature of the cat can easily reach 1500°. Rather risky for any vegetation in the roadway or trail for any vehicle with the exhaust under the car. Good thing for us that offroad Baja Bugs and buggies have high exhaust with no cat, right?

I think I read in the URL that CWB posted that turbo's are ("currently" and that is my input) legal but it is the pop-off valve before the turbo and muffler that is my concern. It would be interesting if this point had ever came up during the discussion and decision on this part of the law.

We do hear more and see more turbo powered SXS and rails out on the sand. On the sand where I ride toys are also being driven fast in the trees. Add to that, there is European Grass that the enviro's planted that would also be of a concern as they are often near the tops of some of the dunes and are also along the sides of some of the trails. The reason I mention this is that the Fed laws are usually broad ranged that covers the worse situation and then is applicable to all places.

After dealing several times with Fed Rangers and local Sherriff deputies on exhaust noise (especially on in-muffled exhaust or poorly designed exhaust systems especially those straight through styles with the outlet point towards the sky) especially those Fed Rangers who were very strict (agenda lead) in law compliance that bother's me. With some of the very unforgiving, toe-the-mark Rangers and assuming that they figure it out, then they will focus in on it.

Dusty's point on the catalytic converters causing fires is a very true thing and has been a problem... for a long time now. I haven't heard of it lately but then I don't pay attention to it either. With all the fires going on... it could be suspect.

I forgot to mention was that years ago, when Leather invited me here, I was on another site which I don't think is available anymore at least in the same ownership that it was under. One of the things that did come up there was that the site which, it seems, had had some monitoring by the Greenies based on some posts.

There were also some other clues from them based on some of their yipping; it seem like this may not have been unusual. Locally, there was a legal thing going on over the dunes and some of the things they presented normally wouldn't have been known to them unless they were doing some monitoring of sites. I know it was done the opposite way based on some conversation when the active resistance to it was being formed locally.

With the conversation on the turbo's pop-off valve if they hadn't known or thought about before it could be of some concern now; just a guess on my part... but it could happen.
